As the other reviewer notes, this is a good start and covers a broad scope of what you might run into in Alaska. The egg patterns are perfect for spawning runs where you have big rainbows eating behind salmon and the streamers-flesh flies are great for eliciting strikes from aggressive trout and salmon. I would also add this is a good starter if you are looking for steelhead flies… read more as well during a late Summer and early Fall spawning run to pick up steelhead and salmon..

March 26, 2016Good Start Good Start
Through the past four years of fishing in Alaska (mostly in the Aleutians) I have found that there are so many variables on fly selections. This collection is a good start, but that is where I would leave it. Each fly in the selection has its purpose and can be used for multiple species. That is where the fisherman needs to study area, species, time of year, and presentation.… read more Alaska is big and most people don't realize how big until you have been here a while. This is why communication with your guide and or local fishing shop would be huge on fly selection. Species and time of year are huge for this state. So i would keep that in mind. The egg sucking leach can work for multiple salmon species, some in areas prefer different color variations than others. The flesh fly can be great for giant bows. Egg patterns work well for a variety of species in different phase of the spawn. When it all is said and done presentation is so important in Alaska. From my personal experience in the Aleutians the presentation with certain color schemes catch more fish than a specific pattern. For example for silver salmon sitting deep in a hole (usually under a group of spawning pinks) I will try different egg patterns along the bottom to catch the silvers and avoid the pinks in the process. All in all this is a good start. I wouldn't just rely on this selection of flies for Alaska.
