What is happening here

Im a field ecologist and I wanted comfortable pants that tapered off at the leg because of bugs. I'm an average sized guy and I generally wear a medium, so I ordered a medium. The waist and ankle on these pants are great, as is the length of the pants. My issue is the width of the legs, they are comically WIDE. These things look like parachute pants when the wind hits them, do not read more buy LOL
