Smith Quantum MIPS Helmet reviews and deals for sale

You don't need to be an quantum physicist to appreciate the airy ventilation and heightened protection of the Smith Quantum MIPS Helmet. Utilizing the Aerocore construction pioneered on Smith's Variance Helmet, the Quantum MIPS offers impressive ventilation and impact dispersion with its honeycomb-inspired Koroyd material. Improving upon the best-selling Variance Helmet, the Quantum MIPS features Exoskeleton zonal impact protection that reinforces the sides, which are prone to damaging impacts.

As you'd expect from a premium helmet, the MIPS liner increases protection in the case of an angled impact. This low-friction liner allows the helmet to rotate independently around your head in the event of an oblique impact, dissipating traumatic rotational forces. Keeping it fresh after a long season, the XT2 lining actively wicks perspiration while combating odor build-up. Removable Bombshell Earpads not only block oncoming wind and snow, but also accommodate Outdoor Tech audio systems for seamless listening and call taking (audio not included).

A total of 22 vents are precisely controlled by dual sliders, which open and close the front and back vents independently. This gives you the ability to actively control airflow through rapidly changing alpine conditions, regardless if you're riding springtime slush or chasing cold-smoke powder. Wrapping your head precisely, the Boa FS360 fit system offers both forward and lateral adjustment that eliminates pressure points. Its micro-adjustable feel means you'll be able to fine-tune the helmet's fit to your liking.

Great helmet; couple minor complaints

At the time of my purchase this was Smith's highest end helmet. I'm very happy with it overall, as it is comfortable, and the research suggests it will be a great option to have on my head if I ever were involved in a crash. For those of you considering wearing it with non-Smith goggles, I can tell you the Dragon X2's fit perfectly with it; I love the combo. The few aspects read more I find annoying: 1) It has a magnetic chin-strap clasp, versus the typical push-in / pinch-out style common on most things for the last decade. What this magnetic clasp adds in ease of removal, it it also adds tenfold in annoyance for connecting it; no matter what I do, with gloves on, I can never seem to get the two sides to connect properly; it's annoying enough I'd prefer to just go back to the old style. 2) The fabric parts range from difficult to impossible to remove for washing, so I wear a headsock under it, which is not always desirable. 3) Limited color options. Adding a pic with the Dragon X2 goggles so you can see the flush fit.

Upgrade!

Upgraded my helmet to the MIPS system this season. The micro adjustments allow for a perfect fit. The ears are well insulated but the helmet doesn't have any other insulation just a bit of padding. The new design is really light and has a new buckling system which will be easier to take on and off with gloves on.

Smith is tried and true

I love smith helmets and goggles. This helmet is no exception. I have actually been more happy with this helmet than I was with my Vantage. It is a different fit, and it feels a lot more snug. The magnetic strap is convenient when you just put your gloves on and forgot to strap yourself in. All around a great helmet, and it looks badass.

Recall Strap

I am glad the helmet is more safe now, but the recall strap is cumbersome and does not have the convenience of the old strap. Buy a vantage and save money.

Quantum Recall

Got this helmet in March 2017 - excellent features, excellent fit, really liked the new chin strap (lightweight webbing, thin Y retainers, nice thin profile chin pad, one handed tighten/loosen feature, magnetic buckle). Fast forward to winter 2017/2018 - Smith issues a recall (which is good - safety first you know), but what I get back from Smith is an excellent fitting helmet with read more a standard chin strap (minus the fidlock buckle which is not nearly as thin profile or aesthetically pleasing as the last buckle). It sort of drives me nuts to have paid the extra money for the whole package that was the Quantum helmet ($300) to now just a year later basically have a Vantage helmet ($60 cheaper). I talked with a rep from Smith and told him I was disappointed that they had not engineered a safe replacement that had the nice features previously available. He mentioned that you are really buying the helmet - I have to disagree. I ultimately have a functional and safe helmet now, but am bummed that I'm now missing what I considered to be a big selling point of the Quantum (again, you can get MIPS and Koyroid and adjustable vents, etc. in a cheaper helmet offered by Smith that comes with the cheaper features). Buyer beware of the latest and greatest I guess -

MIPS and Style Is Money

Smith's Quantum MIPS helmet is a heavier move for me as I've rocked a Maze for a while and have loved its coverage while keeping the weight light and a bit of style. Here, the coverage and style increases with a gain in weight. Am I regretting it? Oh no. The weight actually feels welcome, especially in a resort setting and the adjustable venting actually works along with the read more goggle retention system being the nicest its been from Smith. Will gram counters stay away? Yes they should, but all other riders should give the Quantum a good shot.

Excellent helmet

This helmet is very comfortable with tons of ventilation holes and matches perfectly/fits perfectly with my Smith I/OX turbofan over the glasses goggles.

Built for speed

I have about 15 days in this helmet so far. The fit is on par with other smith helmets I've owned (I wear a large in Smith bike and ski helmets) and I find it just a comfortable as the Vantage and Maze. The ventilation system is excellent and only loud when skiing with them open. The Quantum is definitely heavier than other helmets from Smith, but I don't really notice the weight. read more

Everything you want

This helmet really everything you could want or ask for, for head protection. It is super comfortable, slides on smoothly, there are not hotspots, incredible ventilation, and the boa system truly dials in to your preferred tightness with ease. It is quiet and stays in place regardless of how much twisting I am doing or when the slopes get chunky. This piece is top of the line read more in quality, style, protection and comfort; it's everything you could want. Fortunately I have not had to rely on the MIPS yet, however, I have full confidence it would preform as designed, with no complaints.

Recall.

Consumer Product Safety Commission says buckle can disengage. https://www.cpsc.gov/Recalls/2017/smith-recalls-ski-and-snowboard-helmets There is no choice for decided not to buy now, but that is what I did. I am going to buy one when the flaw is fixed. (My Vantage has been great. ) But, I just confirmed with Backcountry that their inventory is not post fix. I suppose that means read more that Smith would take back the helmet, retro fit it with the strap fix and return it. But, it is snowing tomorrow.

Great helmet

I really like this helmet after retiring my Burton Red I used for 10 years. The helmet is very comfortable so far after 3 days of use . It is about 5-6 ounces heavier than most helmets but it feels light to me. I couldn't even tell it was on after riding this season with no helmet. The only thing I think that could be improved are the ear-pads. My ears were a little sore and red read more after wearing it with a balaclava. The next day I didn't wear the balaclava and it was better. The open vents kept my head cool, and dry. The Fidlock chin strap is the best, very easy to use and adjust. The BOA works well, it needs to be adjusted with a thin glove or bare hand though. I would recommend that the helmet should come with a better helmet bag to protect it in transport but overall it is a great helmet.

Bulky and noisy

The fit is good but this helmet feels huge. I also read reviews about noise and I could hear it when moving my head around. Otherwise this is a really high quality helmet. If you don't mind the bulk and noise this helmet could be a great choice. Just not for me.

Thumbs up. Heavy

I am pretty picky about my gear particularly fit and this helmet is working for me. I have been searching about for a new helmet for a couple seasons now but this is the first helmet that has worked for me. I wanted something speaker compatible with MIPS. This helmet fits significantly larger than the Vantage. That is where it is working well for me. The Vantage MIPS medium read more was way tight whereas the Vantage MIPS large was just too big. I have a Quantum Medium and the fit is perfect, not too tight, not too loose. BTW, you would need a pretty big head to fit a quantum large IMO. Update: I have about 15 days on this helmet and have noticed a significant downside. The helmet is heavier by around 4 oz or so compared with comparable models on the market including the Vantage. Honestly, this rather baffles me...why would Smith put out a new top of the line helmet and have it be so weighty.

Any idea if this has the same sizing issues as the vantage mips? The vantage mips definitely doesn't match its sizing chart, different than the non mips vantage which is spot on.
