Salomon Quest Access Helmet Reviews

June 28, 2020Lightweight, not the highest quality
I've been looking for a replacement for my Giro helmet, which is the 4th Giro I've owned in a row. I've always found them to fit my head well, and they had good bang for the buck. That said, I wanted to try something different this time around, and so have tried on a handful of helmets from Salomon, Smith, POC and Sweet Protection. This helmet fits my head somewhere between a Smith… read more and a Giro, meaning it's not as round as a Smith and not as Oval as a Giro. It's super lightweight compared to the Sweet Protection and the POC helmets I've tried, which may be in part due to the fact that it does not contain MIPS/SPIN. It does have Salomon's concussion technology, but I'm unclear on whether that's as good as MIPS - I'm guessing not, but it's probably good enough for most riders. The helmet is stylish, and looks good from all angles, with the exception of the ear flaps, which seem to stick out for some reason. This can be corrected by tightening the chin strap, but you then have to run your chin strap a bit snugger than you may like, and it also opens your ears up to cold wind. This is the opposite of the POC and Sweet Protection designs, both of which have great ear pieces. At the same time, these ear pieces make it a bit more comfortable to wear aftermarket audio chips. The function and quality of the helmet feels pretty cheap, including the chin strap and ventilation functions. The audio compatibility is not well thought out as it's tough to get your chips in and out, and they slide up if you set your helmet down upside down on a table. Overall, a pretty good helmet for the price; I just wish Salomon put a little more effort into the design to take it from good to great.
