Redington Hydrogen Fly Rod - 4-Piece reviews and deals for sale

When you'd rather have a bunch of weight pulling at the end of your line, rather than weighing your rod and casting arm down, look no further than the Redington Hydrogen Fly Rod. Being one of the lightest rods on the market today, the Hydrogen is tuned to give anglers that want a light, fast, and intuitive feel from their fly rod exactly what they want.

The first thing you'll notice about the Hydrogen is the lack of a reel seat. This skeletonized, anodized reel seat keeps the Hydrogen's weight at a minimum, while also increasing the intuitive nature of the rod. The black matte finish on the blank doesn't just give the rod a great look, but it helps reduce glare, so you don't spook any fish that might be lying low in gin clear waters. The Hydrogen has a medium-fast action, putting most of the action in the tip of the rod where it is able to more effectively push flies through wind, and turn large trout more quickly. Redington is offering the Hydrogen in weights ranging from two to six to meet the demands of any dedicated trout angler, along with three nymph actions in a three-weight, which feature a softer tip for easier turnovers and increased detection for subtle takes.

Excellent Trout Rod

More and more guides seem to be switching to Redington for fresh water and salt water fly fishing tackle. Tried out the Hydrogen 5 weight over the weekend and found it to be a responsive rod with good casting dynamics. It is not as precise or as fast as a Helios or Method, or as responsive with a fish on as a Winston but Redington gets it right again with a great value rod that read more will probably be as good as most trout fly fishermen will ever need. I am a fan of the Hydrogen.

Love it so far.

Own the three-weight coupled with a Zero-Series reel. The combination is feather-light and it's my go-to squaretail set up. Rod seemed a little stiffer than I'd expected at first, but I find this makes casting the occasional weighted nymph or small streamer that much easier (wasn't expecting that type of versatility out of my three weight). Presents dries delicately and roll read more casts effectively. In short, does exactly what I wanted it to do, though maybe not QUITE as delicately as my 4 weight Classic Trout. I've been impressed with both.

Light Rod

I bought the 8'-6" 4 weight. I have only used it once. I paired it with the Redington Zero. I paired this light weight duo for delicate top water dry flying. I so far I have only been out to the Lower Provo and used it to nymph. I probably wont be throwing out any drys until the summer. I'm not totally used to casting the lighter line yet, but am really looking forward to getting read more into those finicky fish this year. I would not recommend going with this light of a set up if you're looking to be casting out streemers or big hoppers. Over all it seems like it will be perfect for what I planned on using it to do.

Nymphing Dream?

I picked up an 11t 3wt for Euro Nymphing and love this rod. The sensitivity and weight of the rod is outstanding. The rod is great for high sticking all day long without wearing down your arm. The hydrogen allows for awesome strike detection with the soft tip, but has enough backbone to bring in those bug browns. I have only used this rod a few times, and will update once I read more have put it through the wringer. So far so good though. The price is competitive and you get a great rod for the Benjamins.
