Petzl Quark Ice Tool reviews and deals for sale

The Petzl Quark Ice Tool has been redesigned, making it even more ready to take on steep ice and any alpine terrain you can throw its way. Petzl added a collapsible finger rest that folds up into the shaft for a lower profile, and locks via a button that can be easily operated, even with gloves on. The handle received a makeover, too, with the front and sides of the old model being flattened into a more rectangular shape that increases grip efficiency. It also boasts slightly more room, allowing you to keep your hand in a more natural position, reducing pump as you work hard on steep pitches.

The Quark's shaft received an update, too. It's now hydroformed into a three-dimensional shape that's slightly narrower in the front than in the back, allowing you to optimize your grip when moving up couloirs or other low-angle terrain. Additionally, the hole for clipper leashes has been removed, making the shaft stronger overall.

Petzl added a nylon plastic insert between the head and shaft of the Quark to strengthen the connection, which also makes the head slightly lighter. You can add any of Petzl's head accessories to the new Quark, and use it with most of Petzl's heads for added versatility on whatever terrain you're going for.

What to say?

What to say when everything has already been said. Great tool for people getting into techy alpine endeavours. I have used it only a couple of times for playing in the Andes and loved it! I paired it with a BD Viper Ice tool (hammer) and this felt nicer right away. I will update once I get to know both tools better

Good for mixed alpine terrain

The quark is a unique compromise of snow, ice, and drytooling performance. Relative to other tools that have similar geometries, the standout features are the folding grip rest and the stability, when using the upper grip position (on the Trigrest). The folding grip rest makes plunging on big snowfields more efficient. The downturned pick and low Trigrest minimizes pickshift read more when switching between the lower and upper grip. There are other tools that are better optimized for: snow climbing, ice climbing, and drytooling. However, the Quark does all of these well in the stock configuration and the modularity allows you to optimize the tool configuration for whatever combination of snow, ice, and rock you expect to find on your chosen route. For what it is worth, I don't really like the stock "ICE" pick for pure waterfall ice climbing. Despite the name, the stock pick is more optimized for alpine mixed use on snow, ice, and rock. If you plan on using your tools primarily for waterfall ice climbing, I would suggest either buying the Petzl "PUR'ICE" picks or buying another ice tool that has a more open pick angle (X-All Mountain, Viper, North Machine, etc.).

great updates!

The new shape to the shaft adds a lot of comfort and control, and the folding rest on the bottom of the shaft is great when using these tools in piolet position.

Lean and Mean!

This tool kicks ass! I have climbed with Nomics for awhile- which I love-These feel just a tad less aggressive and lighter. So if you're climbing more verticcal ice than steep things- this tool has you covered. The slide grip is nice and makes even more versatile!

Best tool around

I've climbed with many ice tools, and this is my all-time favorite. Sure it doesn't have the drop handle, but until you're drytooling upside down on horizontal roofs, you don't need anything more! Super light tool with weight were it counts, gives a great swing every time.
