The stitching blew out on the rear end after the fourth time I wore these shorts. Very surprised by the poor stitching from Patagonia, definitely not the quality you would expect. They were nice before the stitching failed, it was definitely a defect. I ordered a size up so they were definitely not to small. Also, the pockets pull back so you can see the mesh liner, not a great… read more look. I have a pic but Backcountry site not allowing upload. August 9, 2019Awesome shorts
Not sure what the 1* review is all about. These are great shorts. Super light weight with ample pockets. Can be dressed down w a t shirt or up w a collared shirt and look great. They dry super fast so they’re great for trips that require you to pack light and wash clothes in the sink or creek between wearings.

Half my summer uniform right here. Slim cut, chino short styling looks good anywhere and the quick dry fabric is ready for anything. Yeah man!

July 13, 2018Terrific Shorts
These are the only shorts I need. Great for chasing the kids at the beach, walking around town, even looking respectable at a backyard party.

June 6, 2018Versatile Shorts
Now that the summer heat has arrived, I have put these to use for everything from yard work, to errands, to fancy(ish) dinners out. Super comfy. I'm planning on using these to swim in as well .

April 26, 2018Great shorts, Dry fast.
Solid shorts, like anything Patagonia puts out. The more pieces I buy the more I understand why they are as popular as they are and how high quality the product is. Great for walking around town or hiking in Park City. Really can't go wrong. I normally wear a 34/35, but had to go with a 36 since they do run a little small. Maybe only one size off.

July 30, 2017Runs Small
I love the fit of this short and the stretch fabric makes them really comfortable for summer activities. I normally wear a 32" waist but a 33" in these fits me like a normal 32.

July 1, 2017Weird Fit, Mesh shows, Not Black
I've worn nothing but hybrids for water activities for 15+ years, and in the water all the time. First off black = grey. Most importantly, the waist just didn't look right, like I was 20lbs heavier compared to other shorts (my wife baulked at them, and I am rather fit). On top of that, the mesh from the pockets are exposed (the normal material doesn't go down deep enough), so… read more you can see skin. Really wanted to like them, but they are poorly designed.

June 27, 2017Great material and quality
I've worn these shorts a few times, most recently on a three-day camping trip. I wore the same pair all three days. They were extremely comfortable in the muggy heat (80*), in the rain, and in the cooler (72*) days that followed. The material is perfect for all conditions. It barely feels like you're wearing anything! I have to get a few more pairs. Only issue I ran into was the… read more sizing. I'm usually a 32. The 33s were too tight so I returned and got 34s. The 34s are a little loose but with a belt and the cord in the waste to tie off, they're very comfortable.

June 20, 2017Great Shorts
Until last year I never would have thought I'd wear nylon stretch pants but I now have several pairs. They are for casual use but they stay cool, are easy to clean and the don't get creased like cotton ones.

June 18, 2017Great shorts...not black
Great shorts, but 'Ink Black' is really dark grey. 5 stars if they were really black.

May 6, 2017Best shorts I've owned in a while.
I'm currently deployed to Bangkok and needed a light short that wasn't too tight or too baggy (I'm 40 and don't like today's skinny fit), that didn't need a belt, and could handle the humidity and sudden downpours we get in Thailand (these repel water). I have two pairs and they have been fantastic walking around the city and at the beach. Pockets are a good size and are mesh to… read more let sand out. Other reviewer is right that drawstring is on the short side but it doesn't bother me as I don't want long strings bunching up. I'm 6'0 at 165lbs and the 33 fits perfect.

I have last year's version of these shorts and they are great. Unfortunately Patagonia changed a few things on this year's version that I think are a regression in functionality. 3 issues were enough for me to return these. (1) The draw string is absurdly short...to the point that I'd have to tie a square knot in these to secure them. (2) The elastic key fob/lanyard is missing...so… read more no way to take a surf /water key. (3) They switched from a button fly to a zipper fly...just not a fan. Admittedly these items may not be an issue for most folks who may just use these as casual shorts. However, I rely on these for casual attire, flat-water paddling and (as advertised) impromptu surf session. So they're a no-go unfortunately. Will look elsewhere brand wise for a hybrid short for this year.

March 24, 2017The good side to look its best...
Fellows, the new age of shorts is here and now. IF you want a pair of shorts that one ups the money maker and puts your good side on another level, then these are the shorts for you. July 16, 2016Worthy of higher cost.
A lot of thought was put into the creation of these shorts. Images do not show rear view; large back pockets slanted for easy access from natural motion of reaching back. One pocket contains additional pocket with a elastic string (connect keys, etc) secured by a zipper. Front: No zipper, "zipped out" with 2 reinforced bottoms and tie string.

July 1, 2016Chino meets board short
These are a great combo of two different types of shorts. As described they're a chino style with stretchy board short material. This means you can pretty much do anything in them...be it casual or active. I've ridden my bike, sprinted and conducted intense calisthenics sessions in these with absolutely no restriction in movement. I have not worn them in the water, yet as I own… read more Patagonia's stretch wavefarer board short for that use. However, it is nice to know that if I needed to I could, and I feel confident that these would perform just as well. As usual with Patagonia these are very well designed and constructed. Great mesh pockets, flat buttons and a draw cord for those who find themselves in the water swimming or surfing. My only issue was with the sizing. I usually wear a 32 in Patagonia, but noticed some inconsistency in the current line up. I prefer my boardies to be slightly tighter due to the material giving a lot when submerged. Since I am using these more for dry/land pursuits I went with the 33's. I recommend ordering a couple of sizes to alleviate potential fit issues. All in all these are great and perform as described. I'll probably get another color.

April 17, 2016Super excited to wear these more often
Just got 'em and I can't wait to wear them more. So far I've worn them hiking and to a dip in the river, post hike. The material is slightly thinner than an average hiking short, so not ridiculously durable but will stand up to some abuse. More of a board short material but they look and act like regular shorts. Very light weight and perfect for California summers. Sizing is… read more perfect for me at 34" and comes down to right above the knee.

April 14, 2016Great all around adventure short
Casual looking short with a great fit! They stretch, dry quickly, and so far have held up pretty well during weekend trips to the desert. So far I'm really impressed by the versatility and durability. I will definitely be getting another pair.
