I live in this thing

Great mid layer for the trail or day to day use. Keeps you warm when your cool but is lightweight and breathable when you're on a tough climb. Only gave 4 stars because the hood is just so tiny (and I have a small head). The hood is basically useless, if I were to buy again I'd get the hoodless version.

Previous Version Much More Durable

Picked this up a few months ago and it is already showing holes where my Apple watch is! I have one of the older R1 hoodies which is noticeably thicker and more durable than the current offering. Very disappointed, the R1 has always been a staple in my wardrobe, this latest iteration doesn't seem to hold up.

Mid Layer

Great mid layer for on the go or out on trail. Material is nice and seems durable. Stayed dry and warm from sweat and rain. Sizing is ok, not a fan of the waistband and the tight hood. Overall a win in my arsenal of gear.

dry

The R1 wicked sweat away quickly while aggressively skiing and touring and kept me drier than i normally am. I think it's the ribbed pattern on the inside. It;s nice and long. I wasn't a fan of the elastic waste. The hood zips up nicely to cover all of your neck.

A nice pullover

I've been testing this out a few times on some early season ski tours in Utah. It's a nice layer that is perfect for aerobic activities in cooler weather. I do wish it had more than just a chest pocket, though. I've also learned I'm just not a big fan of pullovers. Nothing against this one, though - it's well made and functions great. I'm definitely a fan of R1 level from Patagonia read more thanks to this layer...I'll probably end up going with the full zip, though!

Must-have

Perfect mid-layer and works well with a helmet. This and a lightweight Patagonia Houdini jacket is all I bring out to the sierra backcountry in the summer. Have had mine for years and there's pretty much no wear/tear.

Works for women too

I bought this since Patagonia decided make a sub-par option for women - I'm 5'11" and bought the Small. Waist and arm length is great. Shoulders and arms are slightly baggy, as I expected, but makes it great for layering and mobility.

Warm n' light

Wore this for a few days while on a cool spring moab trip. It's really light, breathable and surprisingly warm. It's a great layer for throwing on for a cool morning and taking off once things warm up. The 1/2 zip takes some getting used to, but it gives you plenty of ventilation when you need it.

Great all around hoodie

This years regulator is great. I've been wearing the R1 fleece line for years. This years regulator has an embroidered logo which is a step up from last years version. I wear this down to about 50 degrees without any extra layers just standing around. It has light wind resistance. It is a great for layering for winter activities as well. The material in the center part of the regulator read more is strong, but this years has a little bit thinner material on the out edges for breath-ability. I'm not sure how much it will impact durability, but I haven't had any problems so far over a few months. Medium fits perfectly. If you want something that you can wear all the time, get this hoodie.

Comfy and Warm for the weight

This makes a good cool weather fleece that blends durability, comfort, and style. The fabric is soft and it packs well. This is a standard piece that everyone should own at least one of.

Didn’t take it off for a week.

Definitely my favorite layer. I did a take winter trip climbing Helens, Shasta, and Hood and I didn’t take it off. Kept me warm in our bivy at 11,000’ and layers great under other jackets. The hood is also amazing and I wore it over and under a helmet.

It's an R1, tried and tested

I don't like the pullover style for this jacket. I found that when zipped down the jacket would fold down in a weird way making it look saggy and droopy. But it's an R1 so it is pretty amazing. Very versatile and comfortable!

Best midlayer around

This thing is an absolute workhorse. I keep using this thing and keep being surprised at how much I like it. I might go back for the version without the hood as unzipped the balaclava mouth cover area bounces around a bit, but not a huge problem.

Ladies Size Down

Awesome and technical fleece, I like to size in mens and was psyched about the textile green, but the men's small was a bit longer and wider than I was expecting. I don't fault the jacket for this, as I am a lady, but for any other ladies looking to snag this rad fleece, beware that my wee little arms weren't long enough couldn't reach the thumb holes! Otherwise, magical. I'll stick read more to the women's size on this one.

The R1-Best Backpacking Clothing Item !

The R1 has so many known benefits: warm, breathes well, etc. but also so many unknown benefits. Temperature sweet spot is 30 - 50 degrees F. Perfect over thin Patagonia base layer. Great for layering to cover changing temperatures while hiking - use hood and add a rain jacket for very cold temps (20's F), use half zip for ventilation when it warms up. Thumb holes on sleeves read more help keep your hands warm when not wearing gloves (keep you extra warm when wearing gloves) so you can use your phone for pictures. I sleep in it with temps below 32 F - I put my Sawyer Micro in the zippered pocket to keep it from freezing - works great since I sleep on my back and sides. I also put my phone in the zippered pocket on cold mornings so it does not loose its charge. Great piece of gear.

Warm and toasty

This R1 layer packs up nicely, and is very warm for such a light under layer.

a piece you need for every occasion

The R1 is that classic piece that you will take whether you are hiking in the spring, or need a layer while skiing. It can be a functional option for any day during any season. I ordered an XL in black and it looks and feels great. Durable, long cut which I like, and great arm length with the thumb holes lining up just right. My only thing is I hate tops that have a bunchy elastic read more at the waist, and this has a slight one. Not quite as aggressive as the synchilla by any means, but I prefer a loose top with an bungee adjuster instead. If you have a wide neck you might feel some pinching in your lower throat when you utilize the hood but that is normal, its supposed to fit snugger than a regular collar.

Ladies, Size down!

I often size in men's and was psyched on the bright textile green color, but I was bummed when I realized that the Men's small was rather large for my stubby lady arms. My thumbs didn't reach the holes and the 1/4th zipper went nearly to my waist. I don't see this as a sizing issue, but for any smaller women looking to order the men's version for this technical fleece, I would read more suggest sizing down. Otherwise, the material is soft and I look forward to trying the women's size for climbing and trail running on the cold mornings!

Ideal performance midlayer in the cold

Ever since seeing a friend wearing one of these while wading and swinging flies on the Hoh River on a chilly November morning, I wanted one. I've now had mine for a few years, and it's a close second behind my Houdini for my most-often used layer. I use it primarily for ski touring, resort skiing and cool/cold weather fly fishing. What I like about it: - The hood is snug and read more easily fits under a helmet, warmer hat, etc. - It zips up and can even cover my mouth for truly cold/miserable conditions, meaning I don't need to bring along a balaclava for cold/windy conditions. I just zip it all the way up and I'm cozy. - It has a long enough cut that I can easily tuck it under my pants if I want to really seal the heat in, and it won't easily ride up my back. - Nicely reinforced thumb holes mean I can put gloves over the sleeves and they will not ride up my arms - The 3/4 length zip allows me to easily dump heat if I need to (often a must on a bluebird dawn patrol in the Wasatch where I might go from a frigid, dark trailhead to an east-facing sunny slope in the space of a couple hours) - Last but not least it breathes REALLY well despite being surprisingly warm. This means I can wear it as my outer layer while skinning in very cold temps and I'm perfectly comfortable. The breathability does cut both ways when it gets windy, but that's what a wind shirt is for. Overall this might be my favorite layer, although it's a close competition with my old Houdini wind jacket. I can't really think of any obvious ways to improve it; it's pretty close to ideal.

R1 warmth

Great design with a long front zip for heat dumpage, and great thumbderware design. The R1 is a really warm layer, great to put in the touring pack.
