December 2, 2020Back again with size medium
Ok, so I just reviewed this jacket with the intent of describing the fit to maybe help anyone who feels torn on sizing given the price. I returned the large as it wasn't the fit I wanted for this jacket and ordered a medium. The medium fits perfectly in the body and arms with just enough room for a thicker layer underneath without being too boxy with a thin layer. The arm holes… read more are indeed much tighter in the armpits at this size which is consistent with reviews. I wore it around and found that I didn't notice this feeling too much when actually moving about and doing things, though I did always feel the seam against my armpits. I could see how this would be annoying to those using it for activities that require a lot of arm movement, especially overhead. My other review is just below if you are curious about my body dimensions and such. Overall, I think one should definitely order this at their normal size of you have an athletic broader-ish shoulders, and perhaps go a size down if you have a more petite upper body frame if you want a fitted look.

November 28, 2020Nice jacket, sized up
I got this jacket in a size large. Typically, jackets and long sleeve shirts can be tight on my shoulders so I size up. I haven't worn this jacket out and about, but I decided to leave a review to help with fit feedback. My specs: 5'8, 145lbs, athletic build with broad shoulders, 28" waist, shirt size anywhere from small to large depending on shoulder cut. I noticed that this… read more jacket does have high cut armholes as others have stated, but because I sized up, they weren't an impingement. I could definitely feel that seam when I lifted my arms, though. I am concerned that if I ordered a more fitted size, they'd be too tight. The body is kind of baggy, but the cut definitely allows for room in the hips and butt. I have a different model men's Mountain Hardwear down jacket in a size small and while that jacket has great range of motion in the shoulders, it's narrow at the bottom around the hips and sometimes rides up while also being baggy in the torso. For this jacket, the draw cord helps eliminate any potential draft from the baggy torso, but the loop slips out and can snag. The zipper is delicate and stalls at the bottom when trying to take the zipper sides apart when unzipping all the way. Def be careful with it. The material is very shiny and thin. The arms in this jacket are poofier at the top than I expcted and the sleeves are long at this size on me, but I like longer sleeves. I thought it was pretty unattractive when I first put it on but got used to it. I got this for outdoor activities, so aesthetics aren't that big of a deal anyway. It layers nicely under my shells and doesn't seem to overly compress. The color way I got is really pretty. I am re-ordering the jacket in a medium to see if it fits better before deciding whether I decide to go with this model jacket at all.

Pros - Kept me nice and warm for 8 days backpacking on the WRHR. Did not tear - even when I cringed brushing up against some snapped off pine branches while setting up my tent or laying down on rough rocks. Neither here nor there - a bit big on me. I have a 33" bust and 25.5" waist. I don't mind it being a bigger than I usually like, it allows for layering beneath. Cons - arms… read more are pretty long for me (doesn't layer up nicely with a rain jacket, for example) and baggy.

July 31, 2020the fit is odd
156cm/ 126lb Originally I got size L, but it was too large. Return for size M, and the armpit area is a bit too tight. I can feel the jacket is limiting my arm movement. The jacket is constantly touching my armpits. Since this particular jacket is highly rated for hiking/backpacking and I got it at a good deal, I am keeping it. But I don't think I will buy it again in the future.… read more

May 15, 2020what's up with the armpits?
Love the overall look of this jacket and I imagine it would function well for what I intended it for - backpacking. However, I don't know if I got a defective one or what, but the armpits are cut stupid high. They dig in and there is no way I could comfortably wear a layer underneath. Even with a t-shirt it's uncomfortable. It seems like the smaller sizes aren't experiencing… read more this problem so I think it's an issue with how they sized up the pattern. I purchased a large so there should not have been an issue, but it's as though the rest of the jacket is a large and the armpits are a small. Now I have to pay $7 to ship back a poorly designed, ill-fitting jacket. Bummer.

April 8, 2020So Far So Good!
I got this jacket just a few weeks ago. I was debating between a Small and an XS, I decided on the XS and I'm glad I did! A small would have been WAY too big. When I first tried it on, it seemed so light weight that I would actually be cold or drafty when wearing it out. However, I was pleasantly surprised when I took the jacket for a walk on a cold and very windy Seattle spring… read more day. The Ghost Whisperer 2- hoody keep me super warm and cozy whilst my legs were a getting a little chilly! No feather leaking so far, but only time will tell there. I can't wait to take this jacket climbing! I'll likely post an updated review when I do. :)

April 4, 2020Love, but not for women with shoulders
While it fits really well in the body, it's too tight in the shoulders and chest. If you have strong shoulders from climbing, it's probably not going to be the best fit.

March 2, 2020BEST PUFFY EVER!
I've had a half-dozen puffies over the years - Patagonia, Mountain Hardwear, Marmot, TNF - and while I have loved those other ones, this is undoubtedly the best! Why? Because it's so lightweight yet so dang warm and toasty when it's freezy; yet is not too bulky or hot when temps are mild. It's the absolute perfect jacket for backpacking/camping because it weighs and packs down to… read more nothing. I've worn it in temps down into single digits and the teens and it's kept me warm while camping, snowshoeing and even sitting around (with the hoody up). It definitely blocks the wind and traps the warm air in. But I also wear it a ton even in mild temps like 50-60, and it's my favorite jacket to wear while traveling on a plane. I'm a girl and while I didn't mind the more fitted style of the women's version, I opted for a small in the men's so it would be better for layers and also a little longer length. The sleeves are long, but I like that (hand warmers!)

February 25, 2020strange fit
This jacket is very tight in the shoulders and has a strangely wide torso. It certainly isn't designed for a person with an athletic build. It would be very drafty in cold weather. I am returning it.

August 28, 2019Very bulky
The other reviews say it fits true to size, but I got an L (I am 5.11/150/athletic) and it was way too bulky. The shoulders fit fine and I liked the sleeves that were long enough, but otherwise it looked like a trash bag on me and nothing like in pictures. Bummer!

June 27, 2019Perfect Jacket
LOVE LOVE LOVE this jacket. Perfect fit, sleeve length wasn't an issue when it normally is. Easily stuffed into its own pocket and tucked away in my pack. Kept me wonderfully warm both around the campfire on a cool night without overheating as well as on 4,000+ foot peaks in the White Mountains. Although it could fit true to size, I did go for the x-large because I have broad shoulders… read more and long arms, a medium would've probably been a hair too tight for my tastes, plus I took into account all the layering required hiking in winter.

April 6, 2019Sizing issue is a thing
The reviews mentioning the fit of the shoulder and arm hole are accurate. I usually wear a small, in North Face and Patagonia.

March 28, 2019Light Weight and Great Fit
I'm 5' 2", 34A and this jacket fits comfortable on me. I have been using it every day in SF especially during the rainy season. It's been amazing so far that it is warm and breathable. I've washed it like 4 times now and it's very easy to dry and cleaning the jacket. My only concern is the feather can sometimes poke out from the fabric, everything else is great!

March 25, 2019Love it!
I purchased this jacket after my puppy chewed off the zipper on my black North Face (I'm sending it in to NF to be repaired!). I had been wanting a navy jacket anyway, and this proved to be the catalyst. I have 6 other jackets (all North Face), but this has quickly become my 'go to'. It's light weight warm (I haven't used it in the coldest part of the winter yet, so can't attest… read more to viciously cold temps), and I love most things about it. One thing that I wish it had is an inside pocket (like NF) where I can stash $ or hotel key, etc without fear of losing it out of the basic hand pockets!! I also find the length to be a little difficult, but I'm on the short side.......I thus had to get a larger size than usually do as it comes down past my hips.

February 26, 2019Really tight armpits
I very truly wanted to love this jacket, but unfortunately the armpits were sooooo tight that I definitely could not wear it. Iâm 5â4â 120lbs and ordered the small. The body was a little looser than I expected, but the armpits dug in really tight. The color was awesome and the price was too ð

January 21, 2019Fits perfect
I bought the Stone Green it looks exactly like in the photo, it is very very very light weight, packs super small, fits perfect. I have use it for hiking, traveling or just hanging around, it does a great job keeping me warm.

September 25, 2018Shoulder fit issue
I received this jacket as a gift and loved it despite some sizing issues. I am 5'8 athletic and the medium was almost baggy on me. I exchanged it for a small, which fit much better everywhere except the shoulders. Disclaimer: I have wide shoulders. But after a while I realized that the jacket pinched around the shoulders and underarm area. However, if you have a slimmer build, I… read more would highly recommend the Ghost Rider! It didn't wear out despite surviving winter bouldering and kept me warm the whole time! Plus it is lightweight and packs down into its own pocket

September 20, 2018My favorite Jacket
I love this jacket! I wear this jacket all the time and it is great for whatever I am using it for from long backpacking trips to just hanging around town. It is so light weight that it feels like it isn't even there all I know is that im not cold. It is warm enough to keep you from getting cold but breathable enough to keep you from getting too hot. I love the fit of this jacket… read more because it is slightly fitted so it doesnt git in the way when I am doing technical things like climbing but it is also loose enough to give you a comfortable full range of motion. I would highly recommend this jacket no matter what type of activities you will use it for.

April 26, 2018Warm n' Lite
Holy Ghost Whisperer. I cannot get over the weight and warmth of this jacket. Hydrophobic down boosts impressive loft and packability. My only concern is the zipper - I would not call it flimsy, but it's not exactly heavy duty. Have not had any issues yet! The face fabric material is incredibly thin, and it is hard to believe it has an durability, but the way this is manufactured… read more results in surprising durability. Oftentimes jackets in this weight class will skip pockets, but this jacket has two pockets to keep your hands toasty, and the jackets stuffs into its own pocket. Be sure to storeyour jacket unstuffed so it does not compromise the loft! A boxy fit that is a bit on the slim side. A bit tight in the arms, so I might suggest sizing up if you want to layer. The hood also does not have a drawcord, but its it fitted enough to keep your noggin warm. The tradeoffs for weight (no drawcord cinch on hood and not-so-burly zippers) are minor and overall I'm loving this jacket! The olive color (Green Fade) is beautiful!
