Mercury Wheels A5C Wheelset - Clincher reviews and deals for sale

We've always regarded Mercury Wheels as a brand offering value-packed wheels that offered nearly the same wind-cheating abilities as the big players while coming at a much friendlier price point. With its all-new A5C Wheelset, the firm managed to still maintain that easier barrier of entry with aero performance, stability, and durability that's better than most. Designed using computational fluid dynamics and honed in the wind tunnel, the A5's sits at 54.5mm deep, but thanks to its patented Kamm Tail Technology 10 profile, it offers a virtual depth of 67mm, ideal for attacking the bunch and riding off the front.

We're used to seeing Kamm Tail profiles utilized in aero frame tube shapes, and modern aero road rim shapes have certainly gotten blunter leading ages of the years, but this is the first rim we're aware of that uses a true Kamm Tail shape. Working with world-renowned bicycle aerodynamicist Paul Lew, Mercury designs a teardrop-shaped airfoil with a small portion of the tail end removed. At real-world yaw angles, the airflow will still remain attached and act as though the teardrop shape is complete without creating a low-pressure area behind the leading edge which causes turbulence, giving you the aero benefits of a virtual 67mm deep wheel. However, the lower profile helps maintain stability in crosswinds and blustery canyon road descents. This makes the A5 an excellent option as a crit, road race, tri, or TT wheelset with the ability to be ridden daily.

The aero benefits aren't the only thing we are excited about these wheels though and Mercury improved the braking performance by using special aerospace resins that achieve some of the highest temperature ratings in the cycling industry. You can descend with confidence knowing that you and your rims will arrive at the valley floor in one piece. Further build notes worthy of a mention are its use of Sapim CX-Ray bladed spokes for improved durability and aerodynamics and Mercury's Tempest straight pull hub using a 2:1 pattern that increases lateral stiffness and better balances spoke tension without the use of additional material.

Fast, light, strong

If you are hesitant to click the buy button, trust that you will not be disappointed. If you have a choice, I would recommend going with disc over rim brake. If you do not have a choice, then you should note these rims are crazy wide. I had to release cable on my Ultegra brakes quite a bit to get them to fit and only then did they barely clear the pads. Therefore, they are a bit read more of work to get them to fit a rim brake enabled bike. This would all be unnecessary with discs. Regardless, once I installed the wheels, I was amazed at how fast and light they felt. I first realized this when I lifted up the bike. The difference was staggering compared the stock aluminum rims. On my first ride there was no drama and the wheels were noticeably super stiff and fast. When I hammered on them, I was able to beat a Strava KOM of mine by 29 seconds...seriously. These wheels are quick! Worried about cross winds? That has not been a major issue thus far. You feel them, but it is a predictable kind of feel. I never felt out of control. In short, you will not be disappointed, just make some time to widen your brakes. Additionally, the freewheel is crazy loud but smooth. Finally, my set had a bit of material within the rim that made noise while spinning on the work stand, but seems to have gone away. A little quality check on those may have prevented that. Overall, I am very pleased with the wheels. They look sharp on the bike and I love the subtle labeling on the style purchased from Competitive Cyclist.

High Performance wheelset!

Have used this wheels for more than 8 months with over 2000 miles and love them. They’re very fast, stiff, light and high quality, not easy to find at this price! Also they look great with the stealth decals.

Kamm Tail believer!!!

I waited 10 months to write this review to see how the A5 wheels perform. Having over 3300 miles, I can say that I love these wheels. Excellent hand built in the USA. The hubs are awesome and very smooth with good engagement. Tubeless setup was easy. Well done Mercury.

Great wheelset!

These wheels are a huge upgrade from my Hed Jet wheelset. Going on 7 months so far and everything is good. Love the Kamm Tail design. Light and strong with super smooth hubs. Running Michelin 25c tires on them and they feel good. Highly recommend.

Nicest Wheels I have seen

Kamm tail on a road wheel! I have been waiting for this to happen for a few years. I noticed Trek and Canyon jumping on it with their frames, but not wheels........ and yes I am an engineer.

Fast

Read a review on the A5's and liked the idea of the kamm tail. I read up on the kamm tail and immediately started noticing almost all the sports cars have this design. Back to bikes... I threw them on my road bike to test out and noticed they roll nicely with the hubs having a cool pewter grey anodized finish. The wheels were stiff when I pressed on the pedals or took a corner read more at speed. I had a TT a few weeks ago where I won the Cat 2 category, but also bested my previous best avg. speed by 1mph over 40K.
