Mammut Wall Rider MIPS Climbing Helmet reviews and deals for sale

Mammut's Wall Rider is the first climbing helmet with Multi-directional Impact Protection System to maximize safety from impacts caused by tumbling rocks and falls. MIPS is a low-friction, slip-plane layer that rotates independently around your head to drastically reduce impacts off angled crashes. This revolutionary technology isn't the only feature that makes the Wall Rider innovative. Its hybrid construction pairs a softer EPP core (exposed around the sides) with a hard shell up top to provide protection from both falling rocks and hitting the side of your head on the rock after falling. This hybrid construction also keeps the Wall Rider at a comfortably light eight ounces, and there are large ventilation openings to ensure long-lasting comfort on the wall.

This helmet saved my life.

Well, I had sort of a worst case scenario in the high Sierra with a pretty big rockfall flowing off a summit from about 1000 feet above us. I was hit right in the head with a rock of unknown size. Helmet was destroyed. But I escaped with only a minor concussion. And I can definitely attest this helmet works. I will buy another one when I’m back on my feet. FWIW, I don’t read more think my result was due to the MIPS, but why not have the safest possible helmet. I don’t know about you, but I need my brain and I thought a little extra money to keep it working was easily justified.

Saved my life!

This helmet probably saved my life today—or at least prevented a severe concussion. I was pummeled by massive icefall, hanging by only my tools, just as I was about to clip a good screw. It fractured the helmet in multiple places but I’d argue it took the oblique shot exactly as intended. The MIPS must have helped significantly since it deflected a 2’ x 1’ x read more 6” block, along with multiple softball-sized chunks off my head without peeling me off the route. My back is in agony but I will be ordering another without hesitation.

Protects the Noggin!

I was given this product from Backcountry, but this review Is my personal opinion. I never really took wearing my helmet seriously as I'm spoiled at my home crag with very NOT chossy rock. However, in getting into trad climbing (and just being smarter and making better decisions) I realized how incredibly important my helmet is. During my climbing trip, I was climbing on a pretty read more enclosed - chimney like pitch and the way I was climbing I had my head down, and as soon as I made a large move up - my head slammed right into a boulder. This happened THREE TIMES. If it weren't for my helmet. I probably would've been concussed or worse. I am so thankful that I was wearing this Wall Rider MIPS Climbing Helmet. Not only did it protect me from injury, I didn't feel a thing when I hit my head. Really, the only reason I knew I hit my head was because I heard the Wall Rider MIPS Climbing Helmet hit the rock. In addition to this, this helmet is so lightweight and very easy to carry on my pack. It also fit my head really well and didn't move around on my head like my previous helmet. Overall, I absolutely love it and it will be accompanying me on all of my trips! 10/10 would recommend.

Finally! A Lightweight Helmet That Works

I was given this product from Backcountry, but this review is my personal opinion. I've tested out a few other ultralight helmets on the market from different brands and they always feel like they're barely passing as functional helmets. I have many friends who have broken those said helmets too easily. Often times the helmets were just in a backpack when the weight of a rope snapped read more them in half--that should not happen with something meant to protect your brain from rock fall or impact. The Wall Rider MIPS helmet is even lighter than the other ultralight helmets that I've tried, so I was a bit skeptical. However, after receiving it in the mail and taking it out climbing I understood why the price tag is a bit higher than other helmets on the market. It's badass! I don't know how Mammut built the helmet to be as durable as it is, while still managing to keep it at 8 ounces. It's incredibly comfortable and I like the sleek colors. The adjusting straps at the back of the helmet take a bit of finessing to get the helmet to fit snug, so I'd suggest getting that right before you start climbing. Maybe that'd be a good improvement for the next version? Making the straps a bit more user friendly. Otherwise, best helmet on the market! (Photo is of my boyfriend--but I use the helmet as a lady and it fits me great, too!)

Well thought out

This helmet is well designed, light, adjustable and comfortable. As an upgrade from an old-school hardshell, I'm really impressed so far in cragging and a few short multipitches. I have not had it out for a long day of constant movement, yet. I was a little concerned about getting the fit right with the strap system, but it is pretty straight forward and stays plenty snug both read more while climbing and belaying. Coming from a hardshell, it's significantly lighter and it's noticeable while belaying. The hard shell on top is nice when bumping through a tight corner or roof and not worrying about gouging out foam, while the foam lower keeps the weight down and has plenty of venting to keep cool, despite the dark color. The small bill on the front actually works to provide a little extra sun protection when looking up, and I'm sure would work to direct water or spindrift away from your face in those conditions. While I hope to never have to rely on the MIPS system, it's comforting knowing it is there and I hope to see all companies going that direction. The only thing I think could be tweaked would be to have slightly longer straps on the chin strap and the tightening system on the back. I have a fairly large head and hands, and while the helmet fits well there is very little strap left to adjust with making it a little difficult to tighten. If wearing on a cold day, even with thin gloves it would be near impossible to tighten I think. Pretty minor gripe given all the other pros.

Light and Breathable

All around a fantastic climbing helmet. Once I got the straps dialed in, it is so comfortable I forget its even on my head. Its also very breathable, I normaly wear a shade hat underneath it and still don't typically take it off after a climb. I've used this climbing and summer ski touring and I love it.

All The Features In All The Right Places

I was more than impressed with this helmet. I was having a hard time figuring out the design of this helmet, but it only took me one route to find out the genius. No twist lock? Isn't required, a quick adjustment with the back straps make it the perfect size. Shell only on the front? It has a high potential to rub as you're ascending and needs the abrasion resistance. This is a read more feature-filled essential that you will not go wrong with.

Secure Comfort

This helmet is lightweight and comfortable. You also get an increase in peace of mind knowing you have the MIPS technology to protect you during impact. Thankfully, I have not had to test out the MIPS tech in action yet.

Comfortable, very comfortable

Just got the helmet in today and I have to say that once I spent the time getting it fully adjusted I'm super happy with the fit. The only other helmet I have had was the smaller size of the Camp Titan and while I was happy to have it over nothing, it was never the best fitting helmet. Part of that is I probably should have bought the bigger size (I went with the bigger size on read more this one and am glad for that decision) but even with the smaller size it didn't feel like it was snug to my head and could shift around a bit. This helmet has a snug but still very comfortable fit and on top of that it's a full 30% lighter than the Camp helmet. Add on top of that the hybrid design and the MIPS rating and I feel like my brain is better hands should things go awry for me on a climb. You really can't put a price on your brain and the piece of mind (har har) of protecting it with the best technology on the market (and I got it during a 25% off sale to boot).

Great ski mountaineering options

I use lightweight climbing helmets for backcountry skiing as I prefer to keep my helmet on during the uphill and downhill. This helmet is lightweight so you won't really notice it on your head. Having MIPS technology is a nice added feature especially when using the helmet for skiing. I only gave it 4 out of 5 stars because it is very snug on my head so that I wouldn't be able read more ot use this helmet during mid-winter months when I would need to use a thicker beanie under this helmet. I only tested this helmet out during the spring when a thin skull cap type hat was plenty to keep my head warm under this helmet.

Light Helmet

This helmet is really lightweight which is really nice when it in my pack on the way up. It is really easy to adjust and fits snug to my head. I can wear it with a beanie on underneath as well, and it still fits snug on my head. I love the helmet so far and am excited to use it this summer.

Great update but tight than the original

Was psyched to get my hands on this helmet as an upgrade to my original Wall Rider but when I tried it on, it was noticeably tighter than the old model. Obviously this is due to the MIPS equipment but it's definitely more than a cm or two. I can fit a beanie under my original and be comfortable but on this one, I had noticeable pressure on my forehead and back of my head without read more a beanie. In summary, great helmet but if you have a big head like mine, you are probably going to have to stick with the old model or find a new helmet altogether.

Dark Helmet!

This is a great helmet, it's extremely light, highly adjustable, quite comfortable, and allegedly the most head-protective thing since whenever. It's awesomely expensive, but a helmet is one place you'll be glad, should you ever need it (& trust me -- you just might) that the good shit was sprung for.

Great helmet

This fits snug, it's slim and light, which is awesome because who likes a helmet that is clunky and heavy. It has MIPS which is a huge plus. It's worth getting this one over others for when a boulder falls on your head and you want your helmet to absorb as much of the force as possible.

Why it's not in other helmets?

Just received this the other day so I have not used it but as soon as I saw there was a MIPS climbing helmet, I had to get it. I use MIPS in my bike and ski helmets and in a bike crash this summer I feel the technology definitely helped in a hard fall and hit on the side of my helmet. Other than a bit of a sore neck (whiplash) and shoulder after the crash my head was protected read more and could feel the side forces absorbed by the MIPS system. So figured why not in a climbing helmet. I found out the Mammut Wall Rider is the first and only MIPS. That said the helmet is super light. adjustable and I got the straps right after some effort, it's incredibly comfortable that I'll wear it all the time.
