Mammut Astro Guide Glove - Men's Reviews

November 21, 2018Almost, but not quite.
Wanted to love these gloves, and I nearly did, but the fit is a bit odd, and more importantly, the velcro enclosure is too bulky for an undercuff glove. They seemed like they were going to be plenty warm, but...... Note - the photo for these on the backcountry website is incorrect. I ordered a size 8, and questioned the tight fit across the palm with an open hand. It was a bit… read more tight while completely opening/stretching the palm/hand. While this is not necessarily a motion that anyone really does, I figured I would try a size up. Started a return for the 8, and ordered a 9, thinking it would be perfect. Still a little strange of a fit - not a whole lot of difference in the open hand fit, but now some of the fingers were too long, and the bulk was strange in some places, but tight in other places. I went back and forth between the 8, and 9, trying each on, then the other. I really could have gone with either, since the fit was not horrible, just kind of odd. Again, tight in some places, bulky in other's. Everyone's hands are different, so I don't really think that is all that big of a deal. I was going to keep one of the pairs, but in the end, decided against it. The fatal flaw for these gloves is the velcro strap - it's too bulky. After trying it on with my puffy, and attempting to slide the sleeves over them, I decided that I was going to return both pair of gloves. Not only was it a little bit of a pain to get the sleeve over the strap (bulk), I anticipated unneeded wear over time when using a puffy with these. It just felt like the larger profile padded leather on the strap, and the velcro was going to prematurely wear the sleeves of my puffy, which is just too expensive to let happen over a pair of gloves. I would have kept/decided on one pair of these if it was not for the bulky strap. These are nice, I like the look, and I am pretty sure that the fit would have molded to my hand a bit over time. The strap was just too bulky. IMO - if you are going to make an undercuff glove with a velcro enclosure, it should be as low profile as possible. If I was only going to wear these with a hardshell, I would have possibly kept them, but I just saw the velcro/strap bulk destroying my puffy sleeves over time. If Mammut ever updates the design with a lower profile closure, like many companies utilize, I would purchase again. It really makes no sense to me why the strap end is so bulky.

October 6, 2018Great fit and details
Got this glove as I'm looking for a windstoper glove for mild cool weather and up hill skiing and touring. Tried this one kind of on a whim as years ago I had a Mammut windstopper glove that I liked but lost along the way. Glad I went with Mammut, this fits way better than expected and the grip is amazing and seems tough. Waiting for snow to start to fly but have used it on… read more my motorcycle and it fits and feels great. Has a light lining to it that stays put and feels like just the right amount of warmth for what I need. Can't think of anything I'd change. Size is true to a EU glove size. Will have happy hands this winter.
