La Sportiva Tarantulace Climbing Shoe Reviews

October 29, 2020Perfect Beginner Shoes
As someone that's relatively new to climbing, and with very narrow feet--it took me trying on a few different types of climbing shoes to finally find these well-fitting shoes. These shoes cinch down well with the laces and also provide added support on harder climbs while defying expectations in terms of durability. It's also a plus that they are versatile in the sense that you… read more can both use them on your gym climbs and for your outdoor climbing adventures.

July 13, 2020Good beginner shoe
I've had this shoe for awhile now and have used it a lot with no real issue. I mostly do indoor bouldering on newer holds and the rubber on this shoe has held up against the abrasiveness of these holds. It runs on the flatter side so it is not a technical shoe (more curve to it). They are definitely comfortable if you are just starting out.

June 19, 2019Beginner comfort!
After some climbing in a gym I decided to jump in and get some gear. La Spotiva was suggested from friends who climb regularly and seemed like the right way to go. This shoe does not disappoint it is not only comfortable but at a good price too. I often get pain across the top of my feet and found the laces apply just the right amount of pressure after some small adjustments whilst… read more still remaining snug. Would definitely recommend.

May 11, 2019Perfect for Beginners
La Sportiva put together a great beginner shoe here! It isn't too uncomfortable when sized right (toes should be just a little snug, but not too much to be painful) and the laces cinch up perfectly and can be relaced to apply pressure where it's needed. They're also at the perfect price point where it makes sense to buy your very own climbing shoes instead of constantly renting!

May 1, 2019Good shoe
Iâm really pleased with this shoe for the price point, itâs holding up really well and performs well, itâs not as good at edging as I hoped but it still does pretty well.

April 30, 2019Great Beginners!
I got these shoes as a gift for my friend and they work great! I think they are great indoor climbing shoes for starting out climbers. Not aggressive and super easy to wear. Keep in mind that these do stretch out a little bit so maybe half size down. These aren't good for super technical moves.

March 9, 2019First Shoe
Was told by many people that these were the go to beginner shoe so I decided to give them a go and they did not disappoint. Super comfortable and nice grip.

February 7, 2019sizing
I really like my shoes. I haven't used them much so far but they are really comfortable. They are my very first pair of climbing shoe. I had no experience having one before. so i bought exactly same size as my street shoes. I'm 5' 11" and wear 44 for my street. same size of these shoes are quite comfortable and my toes are touching the front of the shoe while I walk on the ground.… read more However, once I climb I feel like I would have helped if they were a little bit tighter. I will not return or change the size for mine, but next time I will buy one size smaller from my street shoes.

February 7, 2019Great Beginner Shoe
I gave these as a gift for Christmas to a friend just getting into climbing. I used to have them when I first started climbing and they are a great option for escaping the rental shoes to start learning better foot work. Make sure to size them properly and they're an excellent option. If you're just starting out, I would not recommend sizing down aggressively like all the rumors… read more say, that's something that really only makes a performance difference in the top tier climbing addicts and pros. When you're starting out, you want them snug with your toes curled a tiny bit but not painful. If they're painful then you'll find yourself hating climbing, never wanting to put the shoes back on, and eventually you'll stop climbing. So for the newbies out there, do yourself a favor and size these more towards comfort so you'll keep coming back to the walls :)

February 1, 2019Best gift!
I bought these as a gift and they are the best starter climbing shoes out there! I have the women's version and use them for the gym and outside! The laces can add extra tight support throughout your arch. The leather can stretch over time to fit your foot perfectly. La Sportiva has been making climbing shoes since 1928 in Italy! They really know what they are doing and make a… read more quality shoe.

January 6, 2019Perfect Intro Shoe
Looking to get into climbing? Intimidated by options, lingo, and cost? Welcome champion. This is the shoe you are looking for. These kiwi colored angels and I go back to summer 2016. They have helped morph me into the climbing junkie I am today. This is pretty much the only product you need to start bouldering - a fashionable and highly functional foot in the door so to speak.… read more I have worn them from Oregon to Idaho to Utah, both indoors and out. They are snug (as they should be), hardy, and a perfect intro shoe. Cons: there are better shoes with better leather for not much more money, and tarantulaces are associated with goobers. Still, love them 100%.

December 26, 2018Great Shoe to Start
Bought these for my husband and neither of us being huge rock climbers he found them to be great shoes to start with. He only had experience with them in the rock gym but found them to be very comfortable.

December 21, 2018Trad shoe
I bought these a half size up from my street shoes and wear wool socks. I hate burning up my feet in overly tight climbing shoes on big slabs so this combination works for me. Impressed with the quality of the uppers, the adjustability, and the traction. So far I really dig them, even gym climbing they work well. My first pair of La Sportivas - I call them my poor man's TC Ams.

December 10, 2018Solid starting shoe
As the other reviews say, this shoe is amazing to start with if you're just getting in to climbing. However, this shoe isn't just for beginners. I've been climbing for years now, and whenever I need to hop on a sport route, I make sure to use these shoes. I've owned a couple pairs now, and I can't talk enough about how great they are! They're incredibly comfortable, and perform… read more extrememly well. The FriXion rubber that Sportiva put into this shoe has almost never let me down. Only after a solid year and a half of solid abuse did the toes start to rip. I definitely recommend this shoe to anyone starting up climbing, or to vets looking for a good big wall shoe.

November 28, 2018Yikes! What Comfort!
Newbie climber here, 100% gym so far. Started with a more aggressive shoe from another mfr and have not been able to dial in the fit or comfort, so they are detracting from my enjoyment of climbing. Read the reviews on the Tarantulace and decided to take the plunge. Got some sizing advice from a BC Gearhead; and Voila! Comfort right out of the box! Have used them for a couple… read more of sessions already and just keep liking them more and more as they conform to the shape of my feet. Can now concentrate on more important projects as I advance my skills. Highly, highly recommend these shoes to people for whom comfort is a top priority.

October 20, 2018Great to Start
Got these when I initially got into climbing. I'd say these are the best shoes to start with if you're just getting into the sport, especially indoor climbing. Extremely comfortable, which surprised me at first, because climbing shoes looked like they'd destroy my feet at first. Pretty durable and a great fit.

October 17, 2018Awesome first shoe!
The La Sportiva Tarantulace is the most comfortable climbing shoe that I have found so far. I tried on several shoes before ordering my shoes from backcountry. I like the lace up version as you can customize the fit to your feet. After the shoes broke in I did find I needed to tighten the shoes up more. It took 3-4 sessions to fully brake in. They are so comfortable that I do not… read more take them off while belaying. I will stay in them for 2-3 hours and my feet are still comfortable. I wear a size 11.5 in street shoes and sized down to a 10.5 or 44. My wife liked my shoes so much she ordered herself a pain of the same shoes.

If I wear a size 9 in most regular shoes, what size do you suggest that I order. I heard because of the leather I should order a half size down with a 41? or a 40.5?

It says these are unlined. I can see a white fabric lining sewn into the toe box. Does this mean they will stretch as if they were unlined, or are they actually lined, non-stretchy shoes?
