great product

This little pump is terrific. I used to try to carry all of my water and don't have to anymore with this device. The water tastes great and I know it's safe. There are no batteries to have to change which is why I got this one. My other one always had me worried when I went out for long periods of time. I'd worry that the batteries would wear out. A great investment for the hiker read more who goes way out into the wilderness for days at a time.

Fast Pumper

There are more durable and nicer options out there (think carbon filters) but the thing that stood out to me while using this filter is that is was really fast. If you know the water you will be pumping is fairly clean, this isn't a bad option. It is light and compact and easy to carry as well.

Compact and light

I have several water purification systems and I always come back to this product. It is one of their original designs and is built to last. Lightweight, easy to use, easy to change filters, durable. I've owned this version for 13 years and have changed the filter twice, nothing else. Still works great.

great filter, great customer service

I own three of these, my first one being when they called it the "PUR". I've used it dozens of times with only one problem, I snapped off the input tube one trip but was able to do a field jig and save the weekend. When I contacted Katadyn AND admitted that it was my fault, they sent me a replacement case for free! I DID modify it a bit by using my sharpie to write "dirty" and read more 'Clean" on the proper hoses to avoid mixing them up and by writing "IN" and "OUT" on the filter for the same reason. A nice thing is when Katadyn changed the filters so that the Hiker and Hiker-Pro now take the same filter. I AM a fanatic about pre-filtering my intake and most bad reviews read "it got clogged when I tried to filter mud" but the world is filled with stupid people. My ONLY complaint is that the filter unit costs $40 so I strive to extend the life by my fanatical pre-filtering regime. I also buy extra filter cartridges whenever they are on sale so I always have one on hand. I love the filter and I love the customer service. And I like how that little spurt on the Nalgene adaptor tells me that my bottle is filled.

Awesome Entry level purifier

Across two countries and 14 states, this little filter has seen its fair share of use. I have probably purified around 400 Liters of water through this and it still performs like the day I got it. The nalgene and camelbak adapters are a nice touch. I especially like the prefilter at the end of the inlet hose. I had an older pump that did not have this feature and it was much more read more prone to clogging and premature filter replacement. As a con, its definitely not the lightest or smallest filter but, the filter life and the very reasonable price help to offset it's drawbacks. Bottom line, for the price, you can't beat this pump. With a little routine maintenance and proper storage, it will last you a lifetime.

Great Filter

This is my go to for water purification on the trail. I can fill a nalgene bottle in about a minute. It comes with attachments to easily fit nalgene bottles and Camelback bladders. It cleans up easily when I'm home and water doesn't have a noticeable taste or odor after using it. I haven't had to replace the filter yet but with as common as this device is filters should be easy read more to find.

Does the trick!

I have used this filter for nearly 5 years now & it hasn't failed me yet. Changing the filter almost yearly & routine maintenance it works great! It pumps fast enough & it doesn't feel like you just had a work out session when your done. Nothing fancy & it does exactly what it was made to do!

Nice basic filter

My PUR version (bought out by Katadyn) is still going strong. I bought it when I was 8! and after a filter replacement and a casing replacement it is still working fine with the original pump mechanism. Not fragile, battery-dependent, or anything else. For NA backpacking does the job without too much weight. Much preferred to uv with glacial or slightly dirty water.

Solid filter, just wish I could find it

I have an older version from around 2009. It is a solid filter and does what you need it to do. I have used it a lot and never ran into any issues. There is nothing better than drinking nice cold, filtered, mountain stream water. This filter gets the job done and will last you a long time. I recently let my brother borrow it and now I have no idea what he did with it. That read more just gave me an excuse to upgrade to the hiker pro which is also an awesome filter. It is just an improved version of the classic hiker.

Sleek, Light and Fast

Filters water as fast as 1 liter per minute which is awesome! Only weighs 310 grams. It is very easy to disassemble to clean. It is very intuitive to pump, a very natural motion as opposed to an awkward twisting motion. Overall, I am extremely happy with my Katadyn Hiker Water Microfilter purchase. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a light, compact and fast water filter.

Very disappointing

I am an avid camper and received this filter as a gift. I opened the box to read the instructions as test the filter (as recommended) before taking it out on the field. The plastic barb that the output hose connects to broke off when I tried to remove the hose for storage as recommended in the manual that came with the filter. I have never used the filter in the field and it is read more already broken. Glad I tested it!

Great value filter

This is a great little filter. Not too big, reliable and sturdy, produces good tasting clean water, and keeps my intestines healthy. I used this exclusively for treating water while backpacking through the superstition mountains in Arizona, this included filtering some of the scummiest most algae filled water I have ever seen, besides thought about drinking. Never once did she read more clog up, and the water always came out looking and tasting great.

Solid!

I've done lots of multi-day backpacking trips with friends and it seems like my katadyn hiker is always the go-to filter, no matter what other filters are on the trip. Always reliable and can be cleaned in the field. Never has let my friends or me down. Most of my friends have replaced their filters with this.

Works Good...Except For That One Time...

I used this as my primary filter for all my trips until I got sick last year...I'm not sure how I ended up getting sick because my filter still had life in it according to the 200 gallon life on it. I was already a little fed up with using this filter because the bag that it came with was cheap and the zipper broke. I was also tired of putting away all the pieces and trying to keep read more track of what tube was the "clean" and "dirty" tube. Call me lazy but I hate stopping and messing with the entire filtration process. I now just use iodine pills mixed with some powder gatorade to kill the taste. You need to let the iodine sit so I always have a backup bottle just in case I can't wait the 30 minutes.

How can you clean a clogged filter? Water is not pumping through? With the filter taken out of the casing it looks like water can be pumped in, but with the filter in , it is clogged/blocked.

I purchased a Hiker Water Microfilter about 8 yrs ago, but have only used it on about 4-5 backpacking trips, to filter maybe 50 liters of water over that time. It's not hard to pump. So is it still safe to use?
