Industry Nine i9 45 Carbon Disc Brake Wheelset - Tubeless reviews and deals for sale
As with all the carbon wheelsets from Industry Nine lately, they chose Reynolds Cycling for their carbon rim experience. It has over 30 years of composites expertise and its in-house resources for aerodynamic development including CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) software and aerodynamic experts have helped develop some of the slipperiest rims of late. Reynolds realizes that Industry Nine knows hubs and on some of their road and mountain wheels it uses its hubs helping both brands construct highly sought after wheels. On the i9.45's, the rim achieves maximum aerodynamic gains often performing as well or better than deeper rims. During wind yaw angles seen in real-world applications the rim actually generates lift and in crosswinds, late stall angles contribute to stable handling. These wheels won't be a handful in windy conditions offering confident handling. Wider is indeed better and the i9.45 gets a 29.5mm external width for excellent support negating any aero losses while opting for neo-popular tire sizes ranging between 25-28mm.
Weight is an area where a lot of ahem, gains were made. The i9.45's reach these remarkable low weights by utilizing disc-specific rims that can focus on layups for the most weight loss and strength, without engineering for a brake track. The rims get laced with 24 Sapim CX-Ray spokes in a 2:1 pattern to the excellent centerlock Torch Road disc brake hubs helping contribute to the weight reduction. The unique lacing equalizes spoke tension and reduces fatigue-related stress on the rims and spokes. Our favorite feature of these hubs is the 60 point, 6-degree engagement from the 3 pawl freehub. It simply responds so quickly to efforts that the results are so contagious, it encourages more attacks. Compared to other disc wheelsets in the same depth range, you'll see the Industry Nine wheels come in at almost half a pound less than others.
We never see ourselves deviating from wider road tires and we're glad that more and more wheels are on board with that thought. The i9.45's have a 21mm inner width contributing to more volume while adding lateral stability to the sidewalls. You can run lower pressures that improve the ride quality, adds more traction, and lets you corner harder. Tires grow 3-4mm wider than their listed width without the added weight penalty that normally accompanies a switch to a larger tire. The Easy Fit Tubeless design features bead channels and shelves that are optimized for secure tire retention as well as making it easy to install and remove tires. Going tubeless will further drop rolling resistance and reduce the chances of getting a flat. The lack of a braking surface also allows for Radius Side Walls which feature a convex shape that allows the mid-section of the rim to be wider than the bead wall and spoke face section of the rims. This lets the rim act as a leaf spring providing vertical deflection allowing for additional comfort without losing any lateral stiffness.
These new wheels feature a lifetime warranty for the original owner. The hubs, spokes, and nipples are black and 12 and 15mm front axle are available with the rear in 12 x 142mm thru-axle with an 11-spd HG freehub.
