Best mitts

Hestra mitts are the best for those really cold days. I had the Gordini storm trooper gloves at first, but there is no comparison! I bought the Hestra army leather glove for cold days and use the Hestra mitt for extreme cold. Definitely worth the money for both!!!

They don't live up to the Hestra name.

These mittens look like quality, it's hard to dismiss the goat leather and gore-tex fabric on the mittens. However, even with all these features, the mittens still feel inadequate. When your hand is in the glove, the liner makes the inside slippery, and so trying to hold onto things such as ski poles becomes unnecessarily difficult. When and if your hands sweat, the liner becomes read more sticky and taking your hand in and out becomes a hassle. If snow makes its way into the interior of the mitten, game over. The snow becomes ice and doesn't come out until its melted by a dryer. Once the snow is in the mitten, heat is no longer kept and your hands soon become ice. Luckily I had backup mittens to wear or I might've gotten frostnip. Overall, these mittens are initially very warm (if you don't interact with snow) , and a good fit. Despite that, these mittens unfortunately do not perform as well as previously thought.

Best gloves for the coldest of days!

This is a fantastic glove for those days + 20 to - 10. Dry, supple, comfortable - toasty! Note, almost too warm on those 25+ days.

Mittens Mittens

Very warm for those cold days. Just the Gore-Tex makes it worth it.

Best mittens on the market

Hestra has established itself and the premier leather mitten and glove maker and these are exemplary! The inside is plush and super cozy for your fingers, the leather is supple but durable, and your hands stay dry and warm thanks to the gore-tex liner. Use them under any weather conditions, save only the warmest of spring skiing/riding days!

Great Cold Weather Mitt

Not for spring or warmer days! But for the majority of winter, these mitts do the job! Waterproof and warm, that's what I ask for and get with these.

Seriously the best!

I got these as a gift and they were a big hit! This is their review: "These mittens are awesome, I have only used them a few times so far but have had hestra gloves in the past and these do not disappoint. I have been using them for snowboarding and they keep my hands super warm and dry! Definitely recommend these for anyone doing any winter sport!"

Perfect for wet storm days.

I usually only wear gloves as I prefer the dexterity, but after an especially wet, cold storm day, I found myself shopping for mittens. In my mind, Hestra has unmatched durability, and these mittens are no exception. The tough leather has put up with plenty of abuse, from dragging my hands through the snow to pushing pine branches out of the way when the trees get too tight. read more While I expected these to have a little more insulation, they actually ended up working perfectly for me. The slightly looser fit allows me to wear thin smart phone compatible liners under the mittens on especially nasty days, which I primarily use to protect my hands from the wind when I need to change the song on my phone or need more dexterity on the lift. These mittens really exceeded my expectations in terms of water-proofing. I've worn these on days ranging from cold smoke powder storms to freezing rain, all the way to complete rain downpour and I haven't had a single problem with wet hands. If you're looking for a bomb-proof mitten that keeps you dry no matter what, these are your mittens.

Hands on review

I got these gloves from a friend a little while ago and love then. They are extremely warm and comfortable. I would take my hands out in the cold to text the ladies, and when I returned my hands to the gloves, they stayed warm. The only somewhat negative thing I have to say is that they are very wide for us thinner people. I wear a size 10 and my fingers almost touch the end, read more yet I have too much room on the sides. Despite that, I would definitely recommend them to a friend and any stranger that asks about them.

Love

I tried out a few pairs of gloves after doing some research and these were the winners. Great quality (as expected from Hestra), great warmth. Haven't used them in wet conditions yet, but research says they keep you nice and dry.

Love these mitts

I have used these a dozen times. They are incredible. Even when they get wet the wool keeps your hands nice and toasty. When you recondition them with the supplied leather balm, they work like new. I put them under the faucet to test and the water just beaded away it was incredible. As I've described to all of my friends, my Hestra mittens are the equivalent of getting in a hot read more shower in a cold day.

Good cold weather gloves.

I'm a fan of these gloves and have yet had a negative experience in 2 years. I moved to MN from CO and needed something that could handle -30 degree weather. These were just the ticket and have come through on many cold endeavors. Very rarely have I needed a secondary glove for warmth, but there have been a few occasions where it was needed. Overall...very impressed.

Is the gore tex worth it?

Due to unusual circumstances my 11 year old daughter had the opportunity to test the gore-tex vs. merely "waterproof" version of the Hestra Heli mitten. Assuming you are already a fan of the Heli, but are deciding if buying the additional cost of the gore-tex version is worth it---it depends. If you are going to be in truly soaking conditions, then yes, go for the gore-tex. read more My daughter went to ski race practice in the pouring rain with one of each mitten as she has a cast on her left hand. She had to wear my mitten (not gore-tex) as it is bigger, on the cast hand, and she wore the gore-tex version on her right. Both mittens are brand new so water-proofing qualities have not broken down on either. She reported that at the end of practice the waterproof (regular Hestra Heli) mitten was soaked through while the gore-tex version was completely dry. At first I had been reluctant to spend the extra money on the gore-tex but am glad that we did so I can be confident my daughter's hands will stay dry no matter how soaking the conditions. As far as my experience with the Hestra Heli, I think they are a great mitten, great quality, however, no, they are not the warmest mitten out there. But they are quite warm given that you can still grip with them. The warmer mittens are more oven-mitt like, and will keep your hands warmer but of course you give up some mobility and grip precision.

Do Not Buy

Went outdoors with these mitts when temp was 2F and my hands were frozen in less than an hour. Had to go in and put old mitts on. For $175, I expected much better performance. To make matters worse, Backcountry would not refund the purchase. Will not shop here again, will buy from LLBean as customer service is infinitely better.

Good gloves, not the warmest mittens

I have reynauds, so I get cold hands easily. These gloves are very waterproof--even more so with the included leather waterproofing wax. That said, I was surprised that they weren't as warm as expected. Temps down to 20ish are fine...but below that, I have to add a liner glove. In comparison, these are about as warm as my Black Diamond Guide finger gloves. For the price, read more I'd expect that if these needed a liner glove, it would be included. Other mitten combinations that I've used with a liner, for the same price, have been equally as waterproof, equally as warm, and have included the liner. I'm not fond of the white leather palm either; it has proven to be durable, but shows every bit of grime. When paired with a light wool liner glove, these are great, great gloves. Without a liner, they are nice gloves, but not great cold-weather mittens, which is what I was really hoping for. I will say that the glove leashes are the nicest I've ever used. If you're looking for gloves for the coldest temps and you're prone to cold hands, either bypass these, or get them with a set of liner gloves. I have nothing bad to say about these, except that they aren't as warm as I had hoped. Otherwise, very competent, good gloves. I'm giving a 4 instead of a 3 as I'm giving the benefit of the doubt, given my tendencies towards cold fingers. Sizing is true to the size chart; a L fit me perfectly.

Best Gloves for Cold Weather

My brothers love hunting. The only thing about hunting season is it is their hands usually get really cold. I decided to get these gloves for them for an early Christmas present and they are so happy with them. They say that they are the warmest gloves they have had and that they are very comfortable. They said they would recommend them to all their hunting buddies.

How thick is the soft fiberfill insulation in these mitts? Is it super pillowy fluffy soft or just something to keep your skin from touching the inside of a cold gore-tex shell?

I'm looking for some mitts for boarding in heavy, wet Australian snow - will the leather on these cut it, or is it likely that the leather will soak through (like the Black Diamond gloves that I'm replacing)?
