Like a wet mop

This jacket was a huge disappointement. The HH fabric just doesn't hold up. The jacket deforms and wrinkles like a prune on the seams. Returned it. Fortunately, Backcountry has top notch customer service.

Awesome coat, super warm.

Just got this and was immediately blown away by the quality and warmth. I’m 5’9, 174 pounds with a 32 inch waist and I ordered a large, the fit was perfect. Plenty of room for a tshirt and mid weight fleece. I was nervous about the removable hood since I live in a really windy state but I just went outside to test it, and it won’t be a problem. Anyway, 2 thumbs up!

Great Jacket - Small Torso Snug Fit

I loved everything about this jacket but had to return it because the torso was way too short for an XL. Definitely a snug fit but seemed like a great jacket otherwise.

Wonderful quality

Ultimately I returned this jacket because the size ran too large for me (I have a slimmer frame and the jacket has a boxier fit than expected based on other reviews) and because I decided I wanted something with a little less insulation. The build quality on this jacket is superb. I love how the outer shell has some give to it, making it comfortable and easy to move when wearing. read more There are also plenty of pockets, some insulated, and one with a screen/goggle wipe inside. The insulation is a thick, soft, and fluffy. I would imagine that I could ski comfortably in this on most days only wearing a base layer. Appearance-wise, this is the best looking ski jacket I have owned. I chose the funky green color and I really love it in person.

Better colors than the Alpha Lifaloft

After an exhaustive search for a new insulated ski jacket, I narrowed it down to the Patagonia Powderbowl and Snowshot and the Helly Hansen Alpha 3.0 and Alpha Lifaloft. The Patagonia jackets were very similar, with a baggier style and what felt like less insulation. The handwarmer pockets weren't very comfortable, but the interior stash pockets were bigger. I also liked what I read more was reading about Patagonia warranty support compared to Helly Hansen. I was a bit spooked by the folks complaining about the HH jackets ripping on tree branches and quickly fading. When I put on the Alpha 3.0 and Lifaloft, they immediately felt so much more warm, snug, and comfortable I couldn't justify picking either of the Patagonia jackets. The "life pocket" in the HH jackets to keep your phone warm seems like an excellent idea, but I haven't been able to figure out exactly which of the pockets it is. I reached out to HH support, but haven't heard back. The HH jackets are nearly identical, but I discovered that the Lifaloft has a number of technical advantages: -Lifaloft insulation is supposed to be 20% warmer -Lifaloft jacket has more robust zippers with better seals -Lifaloft jacket has a slightly different back venting system -Lifaloft jacket has much fluffier collar insulation that should provide more warmth Unfortunately, the Alpha Lifaloft jacket only comes in three colors none of which suited my style. The blues are pretty dull and the orange is WAY too much. The Alpha 3.0 has a bunch of color options that are pretty great. Ultimately, I decided to buy the Alpha 3.0 because I don't mind sacrificing a bit of performance for a significantly better looking jacket that's $50 less expensive. I ding the Alpha 3.0 1 star for reported durability and warranty support issues. If Helly Hansen improves the durability of the fabric to withstand tree skiing, I'd happily give this jacket 5 stars.

Great coat, Outer Fabric Issues

I have had this coat for 2 seasons now. I ski close to 50 days a year and spend a lot of time outdoors. Snowmobiling and snowshoeing. It fits great, is super warm, flexible and looks great. It a good technical coat, and has everything I expect out of a ski jacket, waterproof, warm, not bulky, good venting, good pockets. The only downside is the outer fabric fades badly. read more Mine faded and washed out from the sun on the top of the shoulders and arms at first, and then the first time I washed it in cold water and hung to dry it faded even more. The fabric is also pretty thin, I ski a lot of trees and steeps, the first thin tree branch I bumped tore a gash in the shoulder. I have another jacket I have had for 11 years that still looks brand new and I've skied at least 300 days with it and washed it 20 times. Its an older look and more bulk. Still love the Helly but wish it was a bit sturdier. Going to have to buy a new coat after only 2 seasons.

Nice material

The material is nice a stretchy but I could see it tearing more easily that other jackets. Runs a little on the small side as well.

Almost perfect

I absolutely love this jacket. Fits just bigger than snug, which is the same as medium in most other brand jackets (TNF & Patagonia) I wear. It’s warm enough I’m happy with a T-shirt only otherwise even night skiing. Only thing I wish it had was a earphone cord hole in the inner chest pocket. Otherwise I couldn’t be happier, if I find it on sale I’ll probably grab another read more color even.

Warm jacket, but questionable durability

Warm jacket, fits on the snug side, lots of pockets and features, but durability is questionable, and Helly's warranty is extremely restrictive. Mine lasted for one full week of hard winter skiing. If you can afford to replace this jacket often, it is suitable for resort and groomed-runs-only skiing.

Great Design, Light and Warm

From the moment I put it on, this jacket fit snug and comfortably - although I did buy 1 size larger. Compared to other ski jackets in class, I can tell that it's one of the strongest fit designs out there. I consider insulation to be a little on the light side for extreme cold, but it is definitely not bulky either. A nice coat to wear any place (winter sports or winter anything).

Great ski jacket

Husband lived the warmth and weight- very lightweight, but tech qualities kept him warm skiing. Life pocket helped phone battery stay charged in cold conditions. Great color take 20% off coupons from coupon-code.info

Classic Fit and warm

I should have bought this jacket 3 seasons ago. I used this jacket this weekend when the weather was in the teens. I wore this coat with a t-shirt, smartwool base layer and a Eddie Bauer Fleece vest and I was sweating. I probably could have just used the base layer. I am 6'1" and 185 lbs. The large fits me perfectly. I have the HH Elevation Shell in Large and when I wear a down read more mid layer the jacket is tight in the shoulders. This is my 3rd HH jacket in 15 years. I believe in the brand.

Fantastic jacket for skiing

Took this to Vermont for the weekend, excellent jacket for skiing. Super warm with proper layer, waterproof and windproof. Absolutely no issues comparing wearing around the base lodge to the top of the mountain. Pretty snug fit, if you are in between sizes, I would recommend ordering the larger one 2 things I wish this jacket had: 1. a built in neck to face guard. Foolishly didn't read more bring a balaclava and face/neck was definitely getting cold from the snow and ice kickup 2. about an inch or 2 longer on the torso, it's just slightly short for my preference

Fit for s a bit off/ overall excellent

I was lucky enough to try the jacket on in a local shop and take advantage of a great sale on line. Runs a bit snug, I’m 6’ 205 and the XL was tight with a lightweight 1/4 zip on so I had to suck it up and get a XXL. The length of the jacket seemed to be the same in both sizes however the XXL the sleeves are a tad long but who cares the jacket is fantastic, loaded with read more features and the green fir color is awesome. Can’t wait to hit the slopes and even just wear it apre’ ski. It looks that good!

Fit me poorly. Nice coat if it fits you.

I purchased this jacket as my primary cold weather ski coat. I live in the NE and ski 50+ days a year with many being near zero with wind ect... The quality of the jacket is exceptional and I find few flaws. A minor issues for me was the sleeve gator, I just don't like the way they feel and I like wearing gloves with gators that go over the sleeve. I also think they could add a read more tag clip either from inside the pocket of as a Ring on the exterior. I also like some type of clip in the front hand pocket to clip on keys. Unfortunately I found this jacket to snug when layered with a fleece and a thin long undershirt. I'm athletically built and a med was to tight, I looked stuffed into it. I'm 5'8" and 165. Its going back.

Overall Satisfied. Not perfect though.

Overall I like the jacket. It does fit pretty true to size and is definitely an athletic type fit. Not baggy at all, so keep that in mind when purchasing. The only gripe that I have is that the outer pocket which is advertised as the pocket with special thermal protection for your electronics is actually too small to fit my phone. I have a pretty standard Samsung S7 phone with read more a rather thin protective case and the phone won't fit in the pocket. Ed up putting it in the inside pocket which means, have to unzip the jacket to get to the phone. Not the end of the world, but maybe they should look at sizing the pocket for its intended use. If Im misinterpreting the use of this pocket, my apologies.

great so far!

This is my second Helly Hansen jacket.....the first one had a problem with the zipper and Helly Hansen said not repairable and gave me my money back....so I bought this one. This jacket fits me perfectly, very well designed, and well constructed. My only complaint is that the chest pockets are too small. My cell phone won't fit in the outside left pocket. The inside chest pocket read more is OK. This jacket is warmer than a shell, but you'll need some under layers if it's cold.

Tried 6 jackets and none better

Like a lot of people, I don't do much shopping in brick and mortars anymore, and I decided I would order a bunch of jackets from Backcountry based upon a combination of a holiday sale, specs, and reviews, then return those that I didn't like. Yeah, I understand it's a 1st world luxury and a bit wasteful of resources, but I kept my last ski jacket for 15 years, so there's that. read more Ok. On to the jacket. I completely agree with the other review here that the quality and comfort are great. I'm just a casual skier, so I'll have this over a layer of Tommy John Thermals and a Marmot Reactor Fleece Vest (also from Backcountry) and expect to be plenty warm. The gaiters were what made this a winner for me over the Marmot KT Component, which was just as high a quality and flexible (although the hood was bigger than I needed on that one, too). Sorry to North Face, but their jackets felt cheap and bulky by comparison and the Helly only cost about 30% more. The quality and attention to detail are worth more than double, easy. That said, this was at the top of my price range for jacket, but I'm glad I added it to my cart due to the other review. If you're on the fence like I was, get this! Overall the prices at Backcountry are tough to beat and I'm glad to find a place that sells high quality gear for good prices.

Perfect!

I bought two previous ski jackets and returned them before receiving the HH Alpha 3.0 and couldn’t be more satisfied. Items I love about it: Great Fit, hi-vis liner in hood, sleeve gators, overall high quality, stretch fabric. It’s a sturdy material, but has flexibility to it so that it moves freely with you. I will be wearing this under my NSP vest this season. I bought the read more red color and it’s a beautiful true red, which is hard to find. You will not be disappointed in this jacket.
