The cable that comes with these comes in useful. I have used it to secure my pack to a bench while sleeping in airports. I also use it to secure by bag when leaving it in a hotel room. It doesn't prevent someone from cutting the pack open but it prevents them from snatching it and running. They are pretty heavy so keep that in mind if you are trying to keep your weight low.
