DT Swiss 240S 12x142mm 6-Bolt Hub reviews and deals for sale
For those confused by the ever-changing dimensional standards in the bicycle industry, here's one that makes good sense -- 12 x 142mm. In addition to the stiffness inherent in the 12mm thru-axle, this axle system has a few benefits that make it special. The DT Swiss 12 x 142mm 6-Bolt Hub combines DT's legendary precision with thru-axle compatibility.
Pioneered by Syntace, 12 x 142 is different than other thru-axle systems because the hub mates into guide slots machined into the insides face of the rear dropouts. This makes axle/hub positioning easy -- just like it should be. The installation of an 12mm rear wheel and the corresponding insertion of the axle is as painless as using a standard quick release. Beyond the convenience aspect, the guide slots on the dropouts create a 90° support surface so that the bike rests on the hub end caps. The advantage? Less reliance on the shear strength of the axle itself, greater total strength, and stiffer connection between hub and frame. The hub cannot move up or fore/aft in the frame due to a loose axle. The DT RWS 12 x 142mm Thru-Axle is convenient, offers the security you need, and is tool-free.
The hub shell starts life as an aluminum forging. DT Swiss then machines it into shape and stuffs it full of their super high-quality stainless steel cartridge bearings. DT Swiss freehubs make a distinctive whirring sound when coasting down the trail. It's a beautiful thing. The causes of this symphonious emanation are the two opposing toothed freehub ratchet rings. They provide a near instant engagement and a sturdy, trouble-free drive system. DT uses an alloy freehub body to keep the weight at a minimum.
The DT Swiss 240s 12x142mm 6-Bolt Thru-Axle Hub is black with red DT logos. The brake flange takes a 6-bolt rotor. It has 142mm spacing and will fit in any frame that is designed to accept 12 x 142 rear hubs. The 240s runs on four separate stainless steel sealed cartridge bearings for strength and durability. The ratcheting freehub offers tool-free access for routine cleaning and lubrication. This hub can be converted for use with a conventional quick release using the appropriate DT Swiss adapters. It's drilled for 32 spokes. Claimed weight is 257g.

I ride a set of Enve M60's with DT 240 hubs. People often ask me if they should get these hubs or Chris King on their next bike. My response -- Basically, you get Chris King if you want to prance around and say you have a quality hub, then at night you don?t mind working on it. You get DT Swiss if you actually want a quality hub and at night you?d rather ride then just drink a few… read more beers after. I've had both and put a lot of miles on each. King is good, but has a break-in period, that is longer than a few rides and requires constant adjustment to keep them running like a tight ship. As far as DT, I've never touched them.
