Great boot but not without difficulty

Purchased 10EE elsewhere about 14 months ago. I chose these boots to replace an old pair of Timberland Earthkeepers, which were absolutely destroyed after eight winters and a few backcountry hikes. I wanted a traditional time-tested boot that is waterproof and recraftable. When I saw these Danner II Dark Brown Boots at a local outfitters I had to try them on and immediately read more took them home. Fit: I am a size 9.5 in typical width shoes, size 10 in boots. First pair purchased was size 10D fit like a tight glove but I soon realized the narrowness was too restrictive and I could not imagine breaking in a leather GTX boot that isn't already comfortable. So I exchanged for a 10EE. Best move I could have made (to be clear, my feet are not wide at all - they are narrow to average). These fit like a PROPER glove, not too tight, and not at all loose. After marching around the home for a week I returned the pair because the lasting on the right boot was oddly out of alignment. (you could even see the lacing pattern veering towards the lateral side of the boot). So, the perfect pair was finally procured on the 3rd try. Just be aware of quality control and don't settle for anything less than perfect at this price point. Performance: Uppers are perfect for daily use or short backpacking weekend. The leather and fabric is not incredibly rigid but offers enough stability for your ankle if you lace tightly. The boot doesn't have much for collar or tongue cushioning so an accompanying thick wool sock is best, especially for heavy backpacking. The thin gusseted leather tongue has to be trained over time to sit plumb in the middle and not slide to the side. Laces stay tied and the speed hooks are perfect. The outsole has excellent durability, traction in all conditions, and cushion. On a weekend backpacking trip in the Rockies in early June I had to use the toe to snow shovel (kick chop?) a footpath through snow mounds on the trail - my feet stayed protected and the boot did not delaminate or fail. HOWEVER, the outsole is sort of weird, as if the bottom is rounded, feeling unbalanced like you can rock side to side while standing still. Also, the heel has a sharp edge and does not promote an easy heel strike. I thought breaking it in on the trail and city streets over the past year would smooth all that out but the boot still feels unbalanced - too basic of a construction. The included inserts only perpetuate the issue. I now only use a simple 4mm poly insert w/ no drop, mainly to protect the Gortex lining & stitching underfoot. I have not experienced any issues with waterproofing so I am hoping to remain happy and dry. NOTE: these boots breath much better than the other Danner boots I own that have DannerDry. After a long hiking trip I clean the boot leather with saddle soap and then apply protective boot wax. Overall, I'm very happy with the boot on style, performance, and fit for everyday use and short treks. For the long backcountry haul with a 40-lb pack I will probably have to get a boot with a more modern engineered outsole and better stabilizing upper.

Too Tight!

*This was given as a gift, message from gift receiver: "These shoes looked amazing! They are full leather and the stitching quality is absolute. For the price, this is a good buy. Although my feet run wide and unfortunately I was not able to put these on without discomfort. I will refer this brand and model to people, only if they do not have a wide foot!" These are great shoes, read more I believe in quality and these are the way to go.

Best boots ever

Have owned 3 pair of Danner Lights(and Danner Light II) over the past 30 years as well as several other brands. Danner Lights are the best no frills, comfortable, durable and dependable boots. Although a more traditional boot they are great all around outdoors boots. Unlike other Gore-tex boots with multiple layers, these boots actually breathe especially during warm summer read more days. These are everyday boots well worth the price. Give them a little time for break-in and you won't want them to leave your feet. I will own and wear a pair as long as I'm able to walk!

Comfortable Out of the Box

These fit great and needed minimal break in time. As to width, they are perfect for me. For reference I wear La Sportiva for my trail runners, approach shoes, climbing shoes and mountaineering boots. These Danners fit my foot perfectly. Waterproofing is working well and they seem durable.

Versatile and supportive.

So, yeah - I know there's Danner boots for women, but I'm an East Coast-er at heart and really love me some Gore-Tex when given the opportunity to wear it. I picked up a pair of these in a men's 8, and they fit really nicely on my skinny feet. However, there's definitely some room in the heel cup as I have a narrow heel, but otherwise the fit is stupendous. I exchanged the Danner read more insole with superfeet, and the boots are so comfy! Albeit, heavy, but you know that's to be expected. Really loving the overall durability, not to mention the style is pretty on point too. I typically wear an 8.5 in women's shoes. The width on these are definitely narrow in comparison to other men's boots I've tried on, so people with wide feet beware!

Check the width

These boots looked great, but I had to return them because they were too narrow. When I ordered them there wasn't an indication of the shoe width size or an option to choose. The pair shipped to me were a size D. The shoe length was pretty spot on with what I normally wear.

It's Danner Time

The Light II's are excellent boots, especially throughout the autumn months. I've noticed that if it's anything above 65'ish degrees fahrenheit outside, be prepared for a full on sweat fest. I've done quite a few hikes with temps down in the low 30's, but they lack an insulation layer, hence the reason they are the Lights, so your feet will get cold; rather quickly I might add. read more For anything wintery/snow related, I'd opt for a pair with at least 400g Thinsulate or more. They've got quite a few options to explore, so you'll be in good hands. Oh yeah, the cushy Vibr's defintely do a great job at keeping your feet ache free.

LOVE my Danner's!

I have owned the women's version of this boot for over 5 years. They break in easily and form to your feet over time making a very comfortable fit! The leather is of the highest grade available and still in great condition (and softer from wear) even after miles of hiking, climbing and walking through creeks. The vibram outsole has saved me many times from sharp rocks and rough read more terrain....excellent traction. I highly recommend!
