Continental Der Baron Projekt Tire - 27.5in reviews and deals for sale

Continental's Der Baron Project 27.5in Tire is a favorite of aggressive trail and all-mountain riders ridding across everything from loose, blown-out summer trails to wet rocks and mud-caked stretches after a recent rainfall. Continental gives you the ability to fine-tune its overall grip and compliance over especially rough sections of trail with either 2.4 or 2.6-inch widths.

Choose the 2.4-inch width if you prefer a bit faster rolling without sacrificing high levels of grip or go with the 2.6-inch width if you have the frame clearance and desire enhanced levels of traction for plunging into the rockiest, roughest stretches of terrain. Both are tubeless-ready, so you can gain optimal traction and compliance while running lower pressures, as well as feel a bit more relief on rocky trails, due to the self-sealing reassurance that tubeless provides.

The Der Baron Project Tire features four plies of 240 TPI under well-spaced, knobby tread that clears the muck and digs aggressively into trail conditions ranging from loose and drifty to sticky, mud-caked surfaces. Continental's BlackChili compound offers heightened levels of grip without being slow to roll, which is something that's plagued grippier tires on the market for quite some time. BlackChili won't wear out prematurely, meaning you won't have to swap out tires after a month or two of hard riding. Additionally, you'll find Continental's Protection APEX layer for continuous reinforcement beneath the tread and sidewall, so you won't have to worry about slits and punctures while pummeling over rocks and roots.

Budget Enduro Tire

I do not generally write reviews out of a combination of being apathetic and believe that most reviews on the internet are generated by kooks. However, out of consciousness for the mountain biking community I have taken to the internet and become a tire critic. After Covid struck I was out of work and looking for an inexpensive alternative to a Maxxis tire and gave this Baron a read more shot (I purchased a Continental Trail King for the rear wheel, which was even worse). My first impression out of the box was that the tire lacked the enduro casing quality of Maxxis for sure, but was much softer and lighter than anything I have seen from WTB, Specialized or Kenda. The only other enduro-marketed tire I have seen this light has come from Schwalbe (which is notorious for flatting). On the trail the tire performed above my low expectations. In springy, wet Northern California dirt the tire bit nicely and even did well on wet rock. However as conditions dried out the tire lost its identity in the sand and loose. Upon cornering the tire at speed, it folded and burped air and sealant. And through rock gardens it splatted over and over (even at 30 psi). As corners and rock are where a tire makes it hay in the sport, the tire is a proven throwaway for any aggressive rider in aggressive terrain. This tire is a mud and wet specialist and SHOULD NOT be purchased by riders used to the performance of any other enduro/trail tire on the market. Do not be lured by the price.
