Your new favorite snow study tool

I used to have the older BD snow saw. I upgraded to this one this season after trying a friends last season. Having the long handle makes isolating your ECT's quick and easy. You can also lock the handle and blade at 90* making isolating your smaller colums for your CT and shear super easy too. The blade isn't super rigid so it can wander a little bit but not really a complaint. read more 10/10 happy with this snow saw!

Worth the extra money.

Sure this is a simple saw that you could probably pick up at your local hardware store and accomplish the same task. But while in the backcountry, you don't want gear to fail, with a reputable brand like BD, you can throw this in your bag and not have to worrry about it failing on you. Connection pole attachment is a nice bonus I have the MTN Aluminum poles and it works fine.

Flimsy blade, tough to cut

I recently used the Black Diamond Snow Saw Pro during an avi class, and I wanted to love it. The fact that it folds and stows so well is great. The bad - the blade is flimsy and hard to cut straight lines with. Additionally, the long handle made it hard to initiate the first cut when doing tests. We had to fiddle with the handle angle to be able to manipulate the blade into position. read more Bottom line - wouldn't recommend.

Covers all the bases

I picked up this snow saw this season for snow study and as a utility tool and it has served its purpose well. This saw is very compact and the size is perfect for any recreational snow study tests. Also a handy tool to have around in the backcountry if you need to do a little trail clearing or fire wood collecting. Reliable Black Diamond construction per usual.

Small and Handy

I got this saw for the sole reason that its folding and tiny. I've owned hand-me-downs that were big and clunky, but I decided to snag this one. So far I haven't been able to bring it to the mountains...no major snowfall yet :( However, I cut some branches up for a small fire in the Uintas and the blade was nice and sturdy.

Svelte and versatile

I was looking to make more room inside my pack and when I saw this saw, it was like a gift sent from above. My current saw (brooks range folding scientist) was quite large and cumbersome and kind of finicky on getting it to fold. The BD saw is very streamlined and takes up no more room in a pack than an extra probe, if that. It has a 35+cm blade which is perfect for cutting CT's read more and ECTs, sturdy enough to do PST's, and another reason why I bought it was for the compatibility with the BD poles! Until I realized that it was only the collapsible poles :( It is still long enough to do everything you need to do for even the advanced snow geeks out there, collapses easily, and is pretty durable as well. First time I used it someone had gotten their truck stuck so the long length made it convenient to cut down the tree branches that were WAY up there for traction aid. So it serves other purposes as well which is nice. The saw is in the same slot as my probe, behind the probe in the picture

What I've Been Waiting For

For years i've been packing my foldable tree saw instead of a snow or avy dedicated saw due to it's stronger blade for taking down saplings which is ideal for mid tour bonfires. This saw has a very sturdy blade, that easily handles some wood cutting, but the best feature is it's ability to be added to BD's trekking poles. When out touring, digging several holes, and cutting multiple read more ECT blocks this feature is saves crucial minutes over using cords and probes, making it easier to evaluate more terrain.

Keep your loved one safe and smart

So I got this as a gift for my boyfriend (Grant Kates) as he goes backcountry skiing a lot and that means cornice cutting and digging pits. To make that an easier process for him I got him this saw attachment for his Black Diamond Expedition 2 Poles. They fit perfectly together and also makes it a breeze for him to dig a bit and see the layers of snow clearly. Gives me more peace read more of mind knowing that he has more tools to help keep him safe and in the know when backcountry skiing.
