Backcountry Rustler Gore-Tex Stretch Jacket - Women's reviews and deals for sale

Why We Like It

With the Rustler Jacket, we set out to achieve the pinnacle piece for all-weather protection, equally at home earning turns or riding free refills at the resort. We gave it powerful Gore-Tex protection to keep us dry on the deepest days, and articulated, stretchy construction to make every slash of powder effortless. For those longer days exploring away from the lifts, we graced the Rustler with a chest pocket large enough for a radio, and a unique design that includes a secondary zip at the neck for hood expansion and additional venting. And, not to leave any stone unturned, we insulated the phone pocket so that we'll always have a soundtrack for the ride down.

Our passion, Gore’s Expertise

Our gear-loving expertise in the mountains goes back more than 20 years, and Gore-Tex is one of our favorite names in the game. Given our passion for the outdoors and Gore’s industry-defining expertise, it only makes sense that we teamed up to produce outerwear that defends on storm days and delivers comfort when we’re playing hard.

Construction

Benchmark for waterproof, breathable performance

Gore-Tex is a synthetic laminate that features thousands of tiny holes small enough to prevent water droplets from penetrating but large enough to allow water vapor to escape. This combination prevents snow and rain from reaching layers while still allowing hot air and water vapor to escape, managing moisture from external and internal sources.

Low-weight breathability for chasing goals

3-layer construction is more breathable, more packable, more durable, and lighter than its 2-layer counterpart, so it thrives during strenuous efforts in the worst weather. This construction features a technical laminate attached directly to a face fabric and a backer. Though it’s called 3-layer, the design works more like a single layer that seals out the weather while releasing excess heat and moisture. In this process, the face and backer provide protection while the laminate does the heavy lifting of sealing out water and releasing moisture.

Keeps even the sneakiest moisture at bay

Even the highest-rated membranes won’t do a whole lot of good if the seams between aren’t defended. We fully seal every seam on our technical outerwear, so melting snow doesn’t find its way into baselayers.

Fit

Modern style with room for layers

Our regular fit is built with inbounds resort riding in mind. The cut accommodates multiple insulated layers for the coldest days on hill, while still tapering in just the right places to provide a clean look that’s at home across the world.

Additional Details

Coverage from deep snow

Powder skirts are built into the inside of the jacket at the waist to prevent snow from blowing up into your layers while you slash and turn in powder. They feature a closure at the front and elastic around the bottom to create a seal that can keep snow out, or be undone for more comfort during days spent on-piste.

Recommended Use

Designed to thrive in lift-accessed terrain

Built with daily use in mind, our resort-oriented outerwear features a durable and waterproof construction that keeps you covered through changing weather and holds up to daily wear and tear.

Great jacket, weird fit.

This jacket’s features and style are awesome. If it weren’t for the strange fit I would have been in love. I’m a 32DDD. The medium jacket was baggy in the top, tight in the hips, and the arms were so long they were past my finger tips. Like one reviewer said, it bunched funny under my arms and was uncomfortable due to the excess material. I tried a small hoping it read more would be shorter and it was not. However it fit great on the top half. If I bunched it up over my butt it would work fine, but It’s just too much money to spend on something that fits so poorly. I wish backcountry would be able to provide garment measurements, or a more accurate size chart.

Eat your zippers, no more!

My favorite thing about this jacket is that the zipper is off center. I love when it's cold, and I hunker on down into the neck of the jacket that there's not a zipper right there, acting like a snack. Excellent shell, keeps me dry in all sorts of weather. Other people have noted that the sleeves are long, but I really like that part of the fit. The pockets are great, I especially read more like the higher sleeve pass pocket. There are two things that I would change if I could though. First, I would add wrist gaiters. Who doesn't love the ability to help keep snow out of your sleeves? Second, I'm a snowboarder and I ride regular, so when I'm trying to vent myself on a warmer day, with the way the zippers are set up, this flaps right back in my face and doesn't stay open. If I was goofy, I'd be golden. Literally the only two things I would change on it though!

Near Perfect Ski Jacket

An all-around great ski jacket. Love the neckline. Sleeves are slightly long, otherwise it would be a five star jacket. Highly recommend.

Weird fit in chest and armpits

based on the description and some of the reviews I was really excited for this jacket. However, the fit was WAY off for me. I am consistently a size M (8) shirt (34DD) and 10 pants and have size M or L jackets based on their purpose. I tried a large so I could layer underneath. It fit over my hips, which is usually the trouble spot for me with jackets so I didn't expect this to read more be so snug through the armpits and chest. The fabric, detailing, pockets and length are all great but there is no way I could wear this. I tried it with a long sleeve T and there is no way I'd be able to layer as it was close to impossible for me to move my arms around. The top (shoulder chest area) felt like a size S and the bottom ( waist through hip) of the jacket was true to size.

Solid jacket lots of design detail

I decided to try this jacket out with all of the effort and thoughtfulness that Backcountry put into the design. I’m happy to say it was the right decision for me! I just got back from skiing in Canada . This jacket kept me warm and dry for the entire trip! I love the hood that zips over the helmet, phone pocket, vent for the high zip(no goggle fog here), and long length of read more the jacket! The fit is flattering and loose enough to add a base layer and puffy underneath for extra insulation. I have wide hips & shoulders and this jacket accommodates that as well as my long torso. The only con Ive come across so far is that its hard to turn your head when the hood is up over the helmet and you have to unzip the coat to pull the hood down. I would hands down purchase this coat again. I am looking forward to taking it backcountry skiing over this next season!

Warm and dry!

I'm a relatively new skier with an endless love for deep pow, but without the skills to get down steeper runs without falling. Does this stop me from trying? No. Does this mean I need a burly jacket with the features to keep me dry while I dig myself out of waist deep snow? Yes. This jacket is warm, soft inside, and has all the functionality and amazing material that someone with read more my ski style demands. Pros: Soft brushed interior is WARM Vented neck and pit zips help cool you down when it's too warm Stretch GORE-TEX fabric is waterproof and comfortable to wear Plenty of pockets and storage Long length fits well around my hips, looks awesome, and feels great Cons: The overall fit seems to run really small, but the arms are long and super roomy, which feels a little strange on. I didn't notice once I started moving I had trouble taking the hood on and off over my helmet without unzipping the jacket. Not sure if this is possible with other jackets or not, but I wish it was easier. The powder skirt didn't fit as tight as previous jacket's I've worn, and slipped up during a few falls

Bomber Jacket!

This is the most versatile jacket you need for any and all mountain adventures. It has a sleek, clean look with heaps of technical features that will keep you riding for longer. From the asymmetrical zipper, multiple ventilation details to the intentionally-placed pockets, I can't wait to wear it all winter long. There is super soft fleece inside the top of the jacket to keep you read more warm and snug while you're charging down the mountain. I love that Backcountry designed this piece with Gore-Tex technology and stretch construction to make this jacket 100% waterproof, durable, and breathable. I've tested this jacket a few times and am super impressed by the quality and how warm it is! Did I mention how awesome all of the colors are?! The jacket is true to size and longer in length (which I love!). If you're in between sizes, I'd recommend sizing up for ultimate comfort.

Strange fit

The style/color/and details of this jacket is really great, and the 3L Goretex feels sturdy. I wish I had a chance to try it on the hill, but the fit is just so off that I'm not going to get the chance. I'm 5'3 with an athletic build, and the arms and shoulders of both the small and XS are extremely long and baggy, so that the fabric bunches up in the armpits and shoulder area read more and would be very restrictive and uncomfortable for skiing. Both the previous reviewer and myself are on the shorter size, so perhaps this jacket would work if you were taller. Not for me.

It's okay

Was looking for something to replace my patagonia goretex jacket- I've never loved the fit of (long/large arms/chest/shoulders, and a little snug on my hips). Thought I'd give this a try after chatting with a gearhead on backcountry. The fit on this jacket is not what I expected- the arms are long and large, but somehow also snug around my shoulders/armpits. The jacket is much longer read more on than I expected. It's also a bit thinner than expected. Haven't tested it out yet, but considering the price, and the fact that I don't love it, I may just return. Also- I never understood why they place women's pockets over the chest... for a relatively large chested person, it's awkward to put anything in there. For reference: I usually wear a 10/12 Size 36DD, and I ordered the Large- based on the fit of the Large, an XL would have been way too large, and a M probably would have barely fit me, so I would say the L is accurate. Dark green color is beautiful in person.

Would the rustler jacket more breathable/stretch gortex be a good fit for the wet, raw cold in New England skiing or would the cottonwood heavier shell be a better fit for my region (resort skiing and winter back packing)?

This Gore-Tex jacket looks the most similar to the Kokatat full zip jacket, that I use for kayak fishing, which isn't made anymore. My question is would this jacket work well for winter kayak fishing? Does the hood just have the adjustment in the front, and not in the back? Can the hood fit tight enough for 20-30 mph winds?
