Backcountry Cottonwoods Gore-Tex Jacket - Men's reviews and deals for sale

Why We Like It

We don't mind when the snow gods are dumping in full force—in fact, we welcome it. We created the Cottonwoods Jacket so that we could continue to play in such weather, snug as a bug. Even though the Cottonwoods Jacket is not as lightweight or stretchy as our more versatile Rustler Jacket, if we're plowing through mountains in the Pacific North West it's the piece we want. Articulated sleeve patterning still allows us the freedom we need for pole-planting and binding adjustments, while a plethora of features keeps us comfortable and dry in even the deepest of snow.

Product Features

Construction

Benchmark for waterproof, breathable performance

Gore-Tex is a synthetic laminate that features thousands of tiny holes small enough to prevent water droplets from penetrating but large enough to allow water vapor to escape. This combination prevents snow and rain from reaching layers while still allowing hot air and water vapor to escape, managing moisture from external and internal sources.

Low-weight breathability for chasing goals

3-layer construction is more breathable, more packable, more durable, and lighter than its 2-layer counterpart, so it thrives during strenuous efforts in the worst weather. This construction features a technical laminate attached directly to a face fabric and a backer. Though it’s called 3-layer, the design works more like a single layer that seals out the weather while releasing excess heat and moisture. In this process, the face and backer provide protection while the laminate does the heavy lifting of sealing out water and releasing moisture.

Keeps even the sneakiest moisture at bay

Even the highest-rated membranes won’t do a whole lot of good if the seams between aren’t defended. We fully seal every seam on our technical outerwear, so melting snow doesn’t find its way into baselayers.

Fit

Modern style with room for layers

Our regular fit is built with inbounds resort riding in mind. The cut accommodates multiple insulated layers for the coldest days on hill, while still tapering in just the right places to provide a clean look that’s at home across the world.

Additional Details

Coverage from deep snow

Powder skirts are built into the inside of the jacket at the waist to prevent snow from blowing up into your layers while you slash and turn in powder. They feature a closure at the front and elastic around the bottom to create a seal that can keep snow out, or be undone for more comfort during days spent on-piste.

Recommended Use

Designed to thrive in lift-accessed terrain

Built with daily use in mind, our resort-oriented outerwear features a durable and waterproof construction that keeps you covered through changing weather and holds up to daily wear and tear.

Great Design and Style

This jacket is the best ski jacket I have ever owned. Each pocket and feature has a very specific use and the Gore-Tex works unbelievably well. When I first tried it on, I thought it may have been a little big, but after adding a few layers it fits snug and blocks out that cold wind! It also looks great (especially the bone brown color). Would definitely recommend!

Great design and layout

Love this jacket and the pocket placements. Couldn't keep because the material was a little to stiff and felt bulky. Loved the color and wish it would have worked for me.

Amazing Ski Shell

I have searched and tried ski hard shells from a number of brands and wasn't able to find the right fit and feature shell until I found this one. The Cottonwoods Gore-Tex is an amazing shell, like others have said it is a little heavier/thicker than other shells, but still provides excellent breathability and it feel like a kevlar jacket but much lighter. Pockets in all the right read more places and has a modern fit to keep you looking good on the mountain. Have used it in early season conditions, rain at base blizzard at summit at Okemo. Stayed completly dry and hood fit over helmet without restricting view or movement. On sizing, I'm 5'4" and 165, medium build with a slight beer belly, jacket fits great both with a nano puff underneath or without for warmer conditions. Couldn't be happier and looking forward to putting it through its paces this ski season. Dont hesitate, you won't be disappointed.

"It's Gore-Tex!"

Everyone needs a burly 3L Goretex Shell in their winter line up, or if you are in an area where you are outside in the rain for hours on end, this is also a solid choice! Jacket has a roomy/relaxed fit I am 6'1'' 230 lbs and purchased the Large, fits great with plenty of room for insulation layers. My go to insulation set up is a vest the Backcountry grid fleece pull over; this read more jackethis enough room for my spare tire, insulation layers, and still has some extra room (great if you run cold). I also use this jacket in the Pacific Northwest while working on my 20 acre tree farm on the coast. We get 90+ inches of rain evey year, this thing is BOMBPROOF...I can wear my full face moto helmet and still slip the hood over its that roomy! Having the removable poweder skirt makes this a very vesitile shell.

If you hate water, get this jacket.

I haven't quite put this jacket through the wringer yet, but the small glimpses of what this jacket could do when the winter hits like a ton of bricks disguised as snow and wind excite me. It's getting gradually chilly-er and so far this jacket has been detrimental for keeping my bones warm and my upper half dry. It has tanked a couple of snowball fights with no water seepage whatsoever. read more It has also aided me in a brief 10-degree stint where I had to push a dead batteried car in the middle of night/freezing wind. I did not feel a single splash of cold air where my jacket hugged me so kindly. Which is what it did, meaning that the jacket is pretty true to size. If I were to reorder I would probably size down, but at the same time, the LARGE allows me to layer a little bit underneath. Which is good given that this jacket is NOT really insulated to the point where you can throw on a T-shirt & Cottonwood combo and be warm on real serious winter days. I am looking forward to abusing this in deep powder, and do recommend this to anyone who is a wimp about the cold like I am. In summary, a great jacket where you'll almost never get wet and plus you'll look better than a million bucks taped to a supermodel.

Bombproof

Nothing like 3-layer Gore-Tex keeping you dry during the powderiest day of the season! The medium size has me covered perfectly. It packs down pretty small for the skinner, too.

Great tech jacket

Have been skiing in this jacket (and the matching bib pants) in Utah for most of the 19/20 season. These garments just plain work. Keeps me dry and comfortable all day long. I have Norrona, Arcteryx and North Face gear and this is my favorite. I am 5'9", 170 pounds and wear a medium. I almost always layer and have plenty of room and freedom of movement.

heavy duty

First off I should mention that I bought this jacket for everyday use not skiing. I wanted something that was sturdy, waterproof and could accommodate multiple layers. It definitely meets all my requirements. Great design with plenty of space in the pockets. The fit was good for me but I do not have an athletic shape to say the least. I own two other jackets from other brands read more that are more expensive but not nearly as good as this one. It is a little heavier but it is a small price to pay for the sturdiness. My only complaint is that I wish it came in a little less muted colors.

Well-built Jacket

The jacket did not fit me at all. However, I inspected the jacket carefully and it is very well made - fully taped seams, heavy duty zippers, and the outer material is very thick, good quality and heavy duty. The cut is for someone fairly tall and slim; and the jacket falls to waist. This would be a bomb proof jacket for The resort or for backcountry skiing. Well done on quality read more Backcountry, but unfortunately have to return it.

Review from my spouse

This ski jacket has everything you need and nothing you don’t. The strong Gor-Tex exterior keeps me dry when I spill my coffee on the ride to the mountain and the well thought out pockets means room for all my snacks and trail maps. I’m 5’11” and 190lbs and the large fits me perfectly.

Great shell jacket!

If you are looking for a tough winter shell than look no further. The Backcountry cottonwoods has you covered on those stormy winter days with fully sealed seams and a Gore-tex membrane you won't ever need to worry about the weather outside. Going through the trees and worrying about hitting branches and ripping your coat is a thing of the past this is burly jacket that has you read more covered. This jacket does run large so I would recommend sizing down even if you are layering underneath it is definitely roomy!

Size down!

This is a great jacket, but the sizing is insane. I would suggest ordering your normal size if you are looking for a solid shell in a "ski bro fit". I'm 6'2" 190 and am returning a Large. The arms are really long as is the general length of the jacket. In hindsight, this was not the product for me (can't stand the wrist gaiters and I prefer a more athletic fit) but I have been read more wearing the Grizzly Gulch jacket for 3 days now (size L) and LOVE IT. 4 stars for the Cottonwoods.

Burly Hardshell

Ordered an XL and it was definitely too big - Im 6'1 190 - looks like these jackets run a little big. It was too long in the arms and too wide in the waist for me. I was really impressed with how bulletproof this jacket felt. I have no experience using it in snow/rain but it felt like it will handle anything thrown at it. Might not be the best for touring as it was also pretty read more heavy but did have plenty of venting. Overall its tough to beat this price-point for similar type goretex ski jackets

Solid Jacket

The Gore-Tex in this jacket is great! I took it out for some winter duck hunting where i just sat in the now for hours and stayed dry the whole time! the fit is great as well, However i would say it does run large and recommend sizing down depending on what you wanna use it for.

Nice shell

This is a nice shell for outdoor sports - unforturnatly it did not fit me so I had to send it back. Too bad - I really liked it. This is not built for large shoulders and arms, plenty of waist room. Its kind of a slim build fit.

Heavy Hitter

If you're looking for a durable heavyweight resort slayer with all the features you want with none that you don't, the Cottonwood is the jacket for you. After wearing this a few days on the mountain, I started feeling invincible as the material feels as though it was a coat of armor in it's previous life. Pros: -The build quality feels great and feels as though it will last the read more test of time -With pit zips, a pass pocket, Gore-Tex tec, powder skirt, and oodles of other features, the jacket has all you could want Cons: -Because of the super-durable material, the jacket doesn't move as well as some of the stretchier jackets out there, but since this would be the go-to lift access jacket it doesn't make much of a difference. In a world filled with the lightweight thin shells, it's refreshing to have something a bit more durable.

Super durable and burly!

I wore this out last winter and I was thoroughly impressed, the fabric feels like nothing is going to get through it, very tough! Essentially a free ride jacket that can take abuse if needed. You sledding into the backcountry? Heli-skiing? Side country? This is the jacket you need! Excellent pockets and pass pocket. Also runs true to size, usually wear a large and fit is slightly read more larger, this is due to you layering for different temps. In this picture I am wearing a medium however but I would prefer a large. This jacket would last you a few years no doubt!

What kind of gore-tex fabric is this? Goretex Pro? PacLite? some other lines have designations like N80 N70, N55. Are you able to specify where this fabric falls in comparison?

Hi - I am looking for a jacket that I can use both in the resort and backcountry. Would the Cottonwoods work well in the backcountry? I understand the Hayden is the preferred choice for backcountry, but I don't think it could handle the cold NE winds/wet snow. Thoughts?

Would you be able to wear a standard puff down jacket (like a 650-750 down) underneath this jacket without it being too tight? or should I size up? I wear a size medium normally.
