Arc'teryx Alpha SV Jacket - Men's reviews and deals for sale

Improving upon the iconic protection of the Alpha SV Jacket, Arc'teryx focuses on the seemingly contradictory design concepts of lightweight construction and robust strength, seeing as it's the favorite choice of 100-day skiers, professional mountain guides, and alpinists facing the worst conditions on the planet. This burly yet lightweight shell stands up to jagged rocks and whipping branches, all while retaining the legendary waterproofing and breathability of a Gore-Tex Pro 3-layer membrane for those skiing and pushing peaks in exposed terrain and raging snowstorms.

Very Nice Jacket But Sleeves Are Long?

I bought this in an XL to replace an Alpha SV I bought roughly 10 years ago in XL. The sizing of the new jacket seems to be a bit different than the original Alpha SV and other Arcteryx jackets I've bought. By way of context, I'm slightly over 6 feet tall, about 190 lbs. In addition to Alpha SV I bought about 10 years ago, I have a couple Atom LT jackets in XL, a Cerium LT in XL, read more an Atom AR in XL, a Gamma MX in XL, and an Atom SV Hoodie in XL. These all fit quite well, if slightly loose (my personal preference). I also have a Therme Parka in L, which is slightly tight in the shoulders if I wear a sweater. I also have a Beta SL in L that fits well. The sleeve length on all of these are fine. The sleeves on the new Alpha SV are too long. I was surprised at how long the sleeves are so tried on the old Alpha SV for comparison. The sleeves hang down about 2 inches longer past my wrists on the new jacket. However, when I zip up both jackets and lay them on top of each other with the sleeves out to the sides, the overall length of the sleeves seems to be almost identical. This is a bit of a mystery to me. My best guess is that it has something to do with the way the shoulders are are cut on the new Alpha SV. Your mileage may vary, of course. Having said that, it is clearly a very well made jacket, and I have ordered one in size L. Hopefully the sleeves will be okay without it being too tight in the chest and shoulders.

Incredible craftsmanship

Bought this for my husband. He loved the jacket!! So I’m giving it 5 stars. However, he wears a large in everything Arc’teryx but this large was too big. Sleeves were incredibly long and very rooming around the mid section. We returned for a medium which was way too small in the shoulders. Very sad.

Wonderful

While backpacking in Iceland we encountered a storm the rangers said had winds up to 70 mph, rain and fog. We hiked 17 miles that day. Everyone I talked with on the trial said their jacket leaked. Mine did not. I was warm and dry. Worth the weight and cost if you're out in a serious storm.

last one

This is an amazingly well made jacket. I have put this through a couple of storms and it has kept me dry and maintained a stable core temperature. I have also taken this on a windy hike and it did a great job shutting out the wind. It has the perfect amount of pockets and adjustability. I would recommend this jacket to anyone that wants a long lasting, one and done shell.

Like Darth Vaders Helmet

It's breathes, protects, looks amazing, and helps you crush rebel scum. No lighting bolts though. But seriously, for a pretty darn near impermeable shell this jacket breathes so well. I usually freeze to death on the lift ride up and sweat buckets on my way down but I'm finding such a happy medium with this one. I do wish there was a little more neck room when zipped up but it's read more not choking me or anything. Sheds water like wax too. I'm loving it.

Expensive!

This jacket was bought for my dad. Everything was great about the jacket except he did not like the noise it made when he would move around in it, so I returned it.

Arc'teryx always does the job

I gave this as a gift and this is what they had to say "I ordered this jacket but found when trying it on that it was just too big for my frame and arms. I loved the color blue and the feel but I believe a smaller size would be fitting me. I am 189 and 5’9”.

Great Jacket

Just had this out on Mt. Washington for the first time. The first two days we were not able to summit because of heavy wind and snow. I was completely comfortable in this jacket, a Smartwool baselayer, and a quarter zip light mid layer in 70 mph winds with gusts up to 105. This thing is bombproof. I started with the Proton AR under it, which came off almost immediately. My point read more is that this thing really keeps you warm, which makes it a great winter shell. The pit zips also helped dump heat when necessary. I am a muscular 5 feet 10 inches, 190 lbs with broad shoulders, 32 pant size, 42 - 44 chest. I tried both a medium and a large and went with the medium. It fits the Proton AR or Atom LT under it with no issues at all. I cannot really ever see myself needing any more layering than that with how windproof it is. I can easily fit a puffy over it if I needed to, which I never did. Interestingly, the regular fit medium SV fits almost identical to my large Alpha FL, which is the trim fit. I am a little obsessive when it comes to sizing and was back and forth with what size to keep on this one. After putting it to use I am glad I kept the medium. It fits a nice midlayer under it, but is also not too baggy with just a thin layer either. As always, Backcountry.com has great customer service and has never given me issues with any of my returns or exchanges. I hope that helps!

You get what you pay for an more!

I've have used this jacket now for about a month in Eastern Canada and could not be happier. Combined with a base layer, this jacket delivers everything it promises and more. There is a reason it is the top jacket they sell. Most recently, i put this to the test skiing for a week in Quebec and was not disappointed. From cold days to powder days, i was kept warm and dry.

Backcountry poor customer service—BEWARE

Very disappointed, not with the jacket itself but with Backcountry. The Alpha SV is a great hard shell jacket. In fact, I like mine (in the cardinal color) so well I decided to order another one in black for my oldest son as a Christmas gift and paid full price. However, Backcountry didn’t send me a new one in the original Arc’teryx wrapping with the tags attached. Instead, read more they sent one (obviously used and/or returned by someone else) that arrived today all wadded up in an unmarked clear plastic bag and with none of the factory tags or literature attached to the jacket (like mine was) or even in the box—it looks like a used jacket. This is inexcusable for any new merchandise intended as a gift, especially such an expensive item. Although I’ve placed multiple orders with Backcountry in the past, it’s unlikely I will be giving them any future business. If I’d wanted to buy a used jacket I could’ve done so on eBay for a lot less money.

What a jacket should be

This gives the jacket you buy and it works the way you're hoping for. Tough as nails and for a long time. Just hope they don't change it for the worse in the future.

Nicest jacket I own

This jacket is amazing. The second you put it on you can understand the price point. The design aspects are incredible and the product feels and looks very good on. My only complaint is no waist pockets but it hasn't been a huge issue to me so far. You really get what you pay for here.

LOVE IT!

This jacket seems to run true to size and the fit is amazing. I love the way it feels and preforms. I have skied in it a few times and have been very happy with it. The SV is meant for severe weather, so layer up below it and you will be warm and dry! Highly recommend to any that spends a lot of time out side in variable weather that need something durable.

Fall out shelter with high armpits

I'm 6' 180lbs and wear a medium. I've owned three Arcteryx hard shells since 1999 -- Original Sidewinder (Medium); Tantalus (Medium). Both of my previous jackets were fantastic for their time. I purchased the SV last year because I had the opportunity to spend an extended period in the backcountry of the Wasatch. Although this jacket is not technically listed in the ski category, read more I have used it for backcountry skiing and resort skiing in primarily in Little Cottonwood Canyon. Wearing this jacket is like cheating the elements. When the hood is cinched down over my helmet, I feel like I'm watching the weather on a TV rather than actually being out in it. I wear it with an old pair of Alpha SV bibs in the worst conditions. I have no problem with moving or skiing aggressively. I have noticed the high armpits in the Alpha SV jacket. Compared with the Tatantalus or the Rush, it is a slightly more form-fitting cut. If you haven't worn this jacket before, you will notice that the armpits are cut rather high. I've wondered if this was because the jacket might be specifically designed for climbing, in which case you would spend considerably more time with your arms overhead. In any case, I've become used to it and wouldn't trade it for anything.

Really the Best

I have compared with many others, this is the best. It keeps me dry and warm. It's relatively comfortable, I mean, for what it is. It fits fairly large almost like XL (I am medium/large), but it works well to allow multiple layers under and it does not feel too big so I think it is sized properly. The zippers are good and well placed to allow cooling and to manage pockets. The hood read more is good with a helmet but could be better to allow wearing without a helmet. Also the front part of the collar is great in cold/wet weather, but becomes quickly annoying when it warms up. It allows for good movement without uncovering when I have to extend my arms or look around.

Awesome jacket

Literally this thing can withstand anything from heavy rain to blizzard. Took this jacket to mt Shasta and performed very well. This is an incredible piece of equipment-- well built, durable, and functional. I especially love the chest pockets and hood design, and the fabric is incredibly durable yet moves well and somehow nicely fits the gap between burly and lightweight. read more

Love it in (almost) every way.

It is a perfect shell in every way except one. The arm holes are a little tight in the pit area. They aren’t overly tight just a bit high up. There must be some functional design reason for this because EVERYTHING on this jacket is so well thought out. I really can’t believe how much technology and craft has gone into every panel, weld and zipper on this piece. I had my last read more one stolen and bit the bullett for another one despite the steep price. I just couldn’t go back to a lesser option. I am 5’9” inches and an athletic (not bulky) 170 lbs and the small fits well. I can even fit a small Cerium LT under it as a mid layer.
